UNiTnn STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN WATSON, OF BROOKLYN, NEWV YORK, ASSIGNOR TO EMPIRE MACHINE CORPORATION, A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
MACHINE FOR JUSTIFYING TYPE;
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 695,017, dated March 11, 1902. Application filed June 29, 1901. Serial No. 66,621. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern;
Be it known that I, JOHN W'ATSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Brooklyn, county of Kings, State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Machines for J ustifying Type,of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in devices for diminishing the impact of the lineholder in its descent when moved by gravity in machines of the character of that described in application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 24,291, filed July 20, 1900, the invention of Frank McOlintock, and it relates particularly to devices which act on the line-holder for a limited time only and do not prevent the free movement of the line-holder thereafter on its line of travel through the line.
The invention will be best described by reference to the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which-- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the portion of a justifying-machine to which this improve ment is attached, and Fig. 2 is a sectional "iew on the lines A B of Fig. 1.
Similar letters refer-to similar part-s throughout the several views.
In the drawings, f is the side plate of a typejustifying machine of the character of'that referred to in the aforesaid application. 0 is the line-holder. t' is the top plate. b is the upper channel, having a suitable inclination in which the line-holder travels downward by gravity. e is the series of space-bars assembled in the line-holder; .2, the type-characters, also assembled therein. 13 is the opening in the side plate, through which the thinner ends of the space-bars project. These parts are common to all machines of the character shown and described in the application above referred to. In the present construction a second opening15 in the platef is provided below the opening 13, as shown in Fig. 1, and the line-holder is provided on its face with a longitudinal slot 14, commencing a convenient distance behind the front end ofihe line-holder and extending to its extreme rear. The slot 14: is cut longitudinally on the face of the line-holder, so as to be opposite the opening 15. Attached to the plate f is a bent plate 3, provided with openings 12 and suitable screw 11, which enable it to be shifted upward or downward, as may be desired, and then securely attached thereto. Attached to the upper face of this plate is a lever 1, pivoted at the point 2 and controlled, so far as its forward movement is concerned, by a stop 4: on the plate 3 at its rear end. The front end of the lever 5 is beveled, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to fit into the slot 14 in the line-holder c after the device has operated. The backward motion of the lever is controlled by means of a springpassing over a pin 16 on the end of the lever. The other end of the spring abuts against the disk on the screw-pin 10. The tension of the spring may be increased or diminished, asmay be desired, by turning the thumb-screw 10.
The method of operation is substantiallyas follows: Upon the release of the line-holder c by the operator after filling it moves down the track or way b by the action of the force of gravity, necessarily with increasing momentum. As soon as it reaches the projecting end 5 of the lever 1 it forces the end of the lever to the right, compressing the spring 16. Thereu pen the friction existing between the end of the lever 5 and the side of thelineholder at the point 17 retards the downward movement. When the full portion 17 of the line-holder c has passed the end of the lever, the latter is thrown forward into the slot 14: by means of the spring 9, and thereafter it ceases to perform any function and leaves the line-holder entirely free to continue its travel down the inclined track I) by the action of gravity. The tension of the spring is adjustable and may be made such as to retard the movement of the line-holder sufliciently to make the operation satisfactory.
I claim as my invention- 1. The combination of a line-holder arranged. to descend by gravity, and a device for diminishing the impact of the line-holder and retarding its movementsubstantially as described.
2. The combination of a line holder arranged to descend by gravity, a side plate against which it slides; and a device on the side plate for diminishing the impact of the line-holder and retarding its movement substantially as described.
3. The combination of a line-holder arranged to descend by gravity, a side plate against which it slides; and a lever arranged to engage with the line-holder and retard its movement, and devices substantially as described for controlling the movement of the said lever.
4. The combination of a line-holder arranged to descend by gravity, a side plate against which it slides, and a lever pivoted on the side plate arranged to engage with the line-holder and retard its movement and de vices substantially as described for controlling the movement of the said lever.
5. The combination of a line-holder provided with a slot of suitable length upon its inner face, a side plate against which it slides; and a lever pivoted upon the side plate of the machine, the forward end of which is arranged to engage with and retard the move ment of the line-holder as it descends, and devices substantially as described whereby after the forward end of the line-holder has passed the point of the lever, the point is forced forward into the slot and ceases to operate.
6. The combination of a line-holder provided with a slot of suitable length on its inner face; a side plate against which the line- JOHN \VATSON.
