J. A. HAMANN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
Letters Patent No. 69,427, dated October 1, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT n1 WATOHES.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, A. HAMANN, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Watches; and I do'hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip tion thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification. v
The present invention consists principally in so constructing or forming the pendant of a watch-case as to receive and hold the keyprovided for winding and setting the movement of the watch, the advantagesof which are, that the key can be always kept with the watch, and cannot become stopped or clogged, as is now the case when carried loosely in the pocket.
This invention also consists in a novel combination and construction of the pendant-pusher of a watch-case, when such pendant is adapted to the reception of the key for winding up or setting the watch-movement. In the accompanying plate ofdrawings my improvement in watches is illustrated Figure 1 being a section through the watch-pendant, taken in the direction of its length, showing it constructd to receive and hold the watch-key, which pendant is of that class provided with a pusher for opening the watch-case, and
Figure 2 a perspective view of the watch-key, detached from the watch-pendant.
Similar letters of ret'erence indicate like parts.
A, in the drawings, represents the skeleton-case for a watch-movement, which case is of that class commonly known and termed a hunting-case, B the pendant of the watch-case, and C the key for the movement, which key, around its spindle D, is provided with a screw-thread, a, by which it is screwed'into the screw-socket or hole E, made in the pendant, of suitable shape to receive it. The key-spindle D is bored through its entire 1 length, so that, when screwed into the pendant of the watch, the pusher-rod or spindle F-can extend entirely through it, projecting'at the outer end of the key sufliciently to allow it to be pressed inward to operate the ordinary catch-spring of the watch-case for the cover thereto, this pusher hearing by its inner end against the said spring through a foot-piece, G, which is swivelled to it, so that the pusher can turn upon it, as it (the pusher) is turned through the turning of the key, being screwed into the pendant-socket E.
From the above description it is plainlyobvious that by constructing the pendant of the watch so as to receive the key, the key is always at hand, when to be used for winding or setting the watch-movement; and, furthermore, its bore will not become stopped or clogged by dirt, kc, as is now the case when the key is carried by a person loosely in a pocket of the vest or other article of wearing appareladvantages of great importance and desirability.
In lieu of the pusher-spindle projecting beyond the key when screwed into the pendant, the head L of the key may be provided with a pusher-piece, suitably arranged within such Head to bear against and move the pushenspindle when properly pressed or moved inwards therefor.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1.' The key 0, constructed as described, andadapted to screw into the pendantE, substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. The construction and arrangement of the pendant B, spindle F, and hollow screw-key O, as herein set forth, for the purpose specified.
The above specification of my invention signed by me this 27th day of September, 1866.
J. A. HAMANN. Witnesses:
ALBERT W. BROWN, ALEX. F. ROBERTS.
