Description
@uitrit giedre getest @frn WLLLIA'M D. GEIMSHAW, or NEWARK, NEW JERSEY. Letters lPatent No. 68,362, dated'iS'eptcmber 3, 1867 gimztcduted ugust18, 1.867,-
mrnovrn DEILLING MACHINE.
'To ALL WHoM Ir MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, -WILLIAM D. GRIMSHAW, oi. the city of Newazk, in the countyof Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented, made, and applied to use, a certain new and useful improvement inDrill'ing Machines and I do hereby declare the following to'be a full, clear, and exact description of the said invention, reference being had to the annexed drawing, makingvpart of this specification,wherein- Figure 1 is a` side-elevation of the drilling machine complete.
Figure 2 is a. planet' the saine. I
Figurc-3 is an elevation ofthe bed-plate and drilllhclder; and
Figure 4 is a" detached plan of the bed-plate .and holding-slide...
Similar marks of reference denote the same parts.
My imprdve'd drill is' so arranged that it may be worked by the foot or by' a'blt, and the drill is kept up by a lever and weight or spring, so as to be out of the way while the article to be drilled is being adjusted upon thevbed; but said lever also is employed by the attendant for vforcing the drill to its Vwork'. I mount the bed for receiving the article to be drilled upon an adjustable slide that is clamped to a vertical standard at any desired height, and the bled can bcfslidden nearer to or funken-trom `the said standard,.aseeeeaeionrrequireg in. presenting vthe article to be drilled to thenction of the tool, or said slide can receive u. vise for holding any article, ort-he slide can be turned aside and the bed'or vise be used forany ordinary purposes.. l
Inthe drawing-'a is a vthi'ec-cornered- Vfoot to the standard l). c is a.' hollow' carrying vthe driving-shaft, at o'ne end-ef which is a truncated conc of pulleys, (1, which also actsV as a ily-wheel. These pulleys are-to be driven by a belt to'the pulleys c e, or by the crank-handle f, er by'the foot ofthe workman applied to the treadle g, that passes through a mortise in the lower part ofthe standard, and has its fulcrum at 1, and is ccnnccted by the link h to the crank-pin 2 at the end of the said driring-slmlfft. v`1,' is the drill orA boring instrument mounted in the drill-stock or shaft lc that is set to revolve und to slide vertically in the bearings l l that extend as arms from the standard b. The drill-stock k has a groove around its upper end, taking the point of u. screw,
. 3, in the head m, that is jointed to the lever ln, working through-a jaw, p, at the -top of the standard b, the fulcrum-pin 4 of which is changeable, so as to give greater or less leverage for the' actionof the springe in raising the drill-stock and'parts connected thereto. The drilllstock is rotated by a band, q, passing from the pulleys cl over the guide-pulleys 7*, to the truncated cone of pulleys s on the stock 7c. The guide-pulleys' r are upon arms extending from thestandard b. t is a slide formed oftwo parts clamped hyscrews 5 5 andr 6 to the standard b at any desired height, and uis the bed for supporting the article to be bored- T his'bed d has on its under side dove-tail ribs, taking the similarly formed upper edges of the slides t, so that it can he slidden nearer to'or further from the standard 6,' and hcncg, when any article is secured to said bed, any required number of holescan hcbored in it, allparallcl to each other, without det-aching itofi'omsaid bed, within a space to which the capacity ofthe machine may bc. adapted, because the bed nndslides can be turned around horizontally upon the standard b, or the bed be slidden nearer to or Nfurther from said standard. .If desired, the slides can bc turncdnside from below the drill and the bed-u bc used for ordinary work, orv a. vise with dove-tail lugs fitting the slides t may bc slipped on when the bed u is removed.
What I claim, and desire .to secure by Letters Patent, i s Y 1, The slides t, clamped to the standard 6,'and receiving the bed n, constructed and arranged in the manner and for the purposes specified. y
2.' I 'claim the pulleys d, r, und arranged .as set forth, in` combination with `the 'drill-stock 7c, treadle g,' and crank 2, :is andfor the purposes specicd. 4 I
In witness whereof I have hereunto sot my signuture this iirst clay of Ncvepibe, 13.1866.
' WILLIAM D." GEIMSHAW.
