SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 683,168, dated September 24, 1901. Application filed December 14, 1900. Serial No. 39,922. (No model.)

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, WILLIAM V. BLEHA, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat- Hangers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof.

Myin-vention has relation to improvements in hat-hangers; and it consists in the novel arrangement and combination of parts more fully set forth in the specification and pointed out in the claims.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a front'view of the hanger. Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof. Fig. 3 is a middle vertical section of the same and of a hat by which the device is carried, showing both the normal position of the hanging lever and the position the same assumes when ready for use. Fig. 41s a sectional detail on line 4 4c of Fig. 1, showing the action of the tongue against the base of the hanging lever. Fig. 5 is a face View of a modified form of lever, and Fig. 6 is a detail showing in edge View the connection between the looped arms of the supporting-plate-and the trunnions of the hanging lever.

The present invention is an improvement on the device shown and described in United States Letters Patent granted to me under date of September 1, 1891, numbered 458,7 83, and has for its object to materially simplify the construction therein set forth and produce a hanger which will be cheaper, more durable, stronger, and more artistic in appearance, and one possessing further and other advantages better apparent from a detailed description of the invention, which is as follows:

The outer terminal hook 6 of the lever is perforated to either pass over a nail on the Wall or the hook may be used to grip the rung on a chair or any other object. The basal edge of the lever is extended into the form of supporting-trunnions 10, directly and loosely embraced by the loops 5. The free end of the tongue 3 bears against the base of the lever 6 on the side opposite the direction toward which the loops 5 are bent-that is, on the side next to the inside of the hat, as shown in Figs. 1, 3, and 4. When the lever 6 is swung to a plane slightly beyond ninety degrees to the plane of the tongue, the latter automatically and by its resiliency forces the lever to the dotted position shown in Fig. 3- that is to say, to a position where the terminal hook can be used for suspending the hat.

Having described my invention, What I claim is-- 1. A hat-hanger comprising a supportingplate adapted to be inserted between the hat and inner band thereof, outwardly-projecting arms and an intermediate resilient tongue carried by the plate and made integral therewith, openings at the outer ends of the arms, loops stamped integrally with the arms, the free ends of the loops being passed through the openings, a hanging lever having laterally-projecting trunnions mounted in and embraced by the loops, the free end of the tongue bearing against the base of the hanging lever and adapted to retain the same in a closed or open position, substantially as set forth.

2. A hat-hanger comprising a supportingplate adapted to be inserted between the hat and inner band thereof, outwardly-projecting arms, and an intermediate outwardlyfiexedresilient tongue, all stamped from a single piece of metal, openings formed in the arms, terminal loops bent outwardly from the body of the arms, the free ends of the loops being passed through said openings, a hanging lever having basal laterally-projectin g trunnions supported and loosely embraced by the loops, and a terminal hook for said lever, the free end of the tongue bearing against the lever a suitable distance beyond the lower edge thereof, the parts operating 10 substantially as, and for the purpose set forth.
