To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that l, CARL WITTKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Flue-Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to the improvement of flue-cutting devices of that class which vare adapted for cutting boiler-nues, pipes, &c.
The objects of my invention are to provide an improved rotary due-cutting device by means of which a boiler-fine or similar body may be quickly and neatly severed, to provide improved cutter holding and operating mechanism, and to produce other improvements in details of construction and arrangement of parts, which will be more fully pointed out hereinafter. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accom- I panying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my device. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section on line a: @a of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan View of the cutter-carrying lever. Fig. 4is a sectional view on line z z of Fig. 2, and Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on two planes as indicated by dotted line 'y y of Fig. 2.
Similar numerals refer to similar parts throughout the several views.
In carrying out my invention I employ a horizontal cylindrical casing 1, the inner end of which is provided with a disk-like head 2, having a central externally-threaded projection 3. Through the medium of a suitable coupling 4 this projection 3 is connected with one end of a suitably-rotated shaft-section or other rotating body 5. The outer or forward end of the cylinder 1 is formed with an inturned flange 6, with which is rigidly connected the inner end or base-flan ge 7 of a forwardly-projecting guide extension or arm S, the latter having formed therethrough a longitudinally-slotted opening 9. On the outer side of this slotted opening the guide 8 is provided with a reduced extension 8, on which is mounted to rotate a roller 10, which is prevented from moving off said extension by a nut 11, screwed on the outer end of said extension 8a. Upon the projecting arm 8 adjacent to the base-liange 7 is mounted a forwardly-'flanged or cup ring 12, and on the outer side of the body of the latter is loosely mounted on said arm 8 a collar 13.
14 represents a cutter -levercontrolling stem, the inner unthreaded portion of which passes loosely through the center of the shaft 5 and the cylinder-head projection 3, termi` nating within the cylinder 1, as shown. The outer threaded portion of the rod or stem 14 has a threaded engagement with an opening in a convenient fixed bracket or engine part l5, which is adjacent to the shaft 5, this threaded outer end of the stem 14 having a suitable handle to facilitate the rotation of the same. The inner end of the stem 14 within the casing 1 is provided with a peripheral recess or continuous groove 16, and about this groove is fitted a sectional collar 17. On the outer side of the collar 17 the stem has loosely mounted thereon an externally-threaded ring 18, with the threads of which engages the internally-threaded socket portion of the arm or stem 19 of a horizontal blade or plate 20, which extends, as shown, within the central portion of the casing 1. Between the end of the socket of said blade-stem 19 and the end of the stein 14`are interposed end-thrust-receiving bearing-balls 21. The rounded upper and lower sides or edges of the blade or plate 2O bear frictionally in upper and lower concaved guide rollers 22, which are journaled above and below said blade-body. The blade-body 2O is provided, as indicated at 23, with an inclined slotted opening or mortise.
24 represents a cutter-carrying lever,which is in the form of an elongated bar having its central and enlarged portion slotted, as indicated at 25, this slotted portion embracing the blade-body 20. Within the slotted portion of the lever 24 is journaled a roller 26, the latter bearing in the slotted opening 23 of the blade 20. The cutter-carrying lever is angular in form, being shaped to incline upwardly and rearwardly from its roller-carrying portion, terminating in a rearwardly-extending portion 241, which is pivoted at 24b within the rear and upper portion of the casing 1. That portion of the lever 24 which is in front of its roller 26 extends horizontally forward into the slotted opening 9 of the guide IOO 8, terminating in outwardly-projecting lugs 27, between which is journaled a Wheel-cutter 28.
In utilizing the above-described invention for the purpose of cutting or severing a tube of a boiler the guide extension 8 is inserted within the tube to be cut until the tube abuts against the ring 12, in which position it is obvious that the roller l() and collar 13 will afford frictional bearings for the guide eXtension. Rotary motion being contributed to the hollow shaft 5, and hence to the cylinder l and the parts contained therein, the stem 14 is turned inward until through the forward movement thereby imparted to the blade 20 and the consequent elevating ot' the roller 26 and lever 24 the wheel cutter 28 is in proper cutting contact with the inner surface of the tube to be cn t. A gradual continuous inward movement of the controlling-stem 14 serves to feed the cutter into the material forming the tube, resulting in the latter being readily severed.
From this construction and operation it will be seen that simple and positive mechanism is provided for controlling the movement ot' the cutter-carrying lever and that the rotation of the casing l and the parts connected therewith results in a comparative rapid severing;r ot' the tube.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a tubecutter, the combination with. a casing or frame, and a horizontally-movable blade 20 having an inclined slotted opening therein, of a lever 24 having a journaled roller bearing in said blade slotted opening, the rear and upper portion of said lever pivoted Within said casing or frame and a cutter-Wheel journaled in the forwardly-extending portion thereof, means for imparting a rotary motion to the casing and a horizontal movement to the blade 20, substantially as specified.
