UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
RUDOLPH KLIOKMAN, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 682,624, dated September 17, 1901.
Application filed May 28,1901.
To all whom it Wtcty concern.-
Be it known that I, RUDOLPH KLICKMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ohicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Knives; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to improvements in knives; and one object is to provide a fingerguard for the blade of the knife, so that continued use of the knife,- as in paring vegetables, &c., will not cause the fingers or hand to become chafed or sore by contact with the back of the knife.-
Afurther object is to provide a finger-guard slidably mounted on the blade, so that it may be withdrawn or retracted into the handle of the knife when desired and also so that when in use the guard will move with the movement of the finger or thumb along the back of the knife and prevent chafing or friction of the finger against/the knife-blade.
A further object is to provide a guard which will not interfere with the operation of sharpening the knife.
With these and other objects in view an embodiment of my invention is hereinafter described, and illustrated in the drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the knife, showing the guard extended upon the blade. Fig.
2 is a similar view with the guard retracted within the handle. Fig. '3 is a view of the back of the knife, showing the guard as extended. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4 4, Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the draw ings, the handle of an ordinary kitchen or case knife is indicated at 6 and the blade at 7. In the back of the handle is formed a longitudinal V-shaped recess 8,Which is divided through its middle by the shank '7 of the blade. This Serial No. 62,230. (No model.)
recess is open at its end toward the blade and extends backwardly into the handle a sufficient distance to contain the finger-guard 9, which is slidably mounted upon the back of the blade. The finger-guard is formed by the back portion 9 and two side portions 9*,t-u rned or folded down against the side of the blade. The side portions are beveled to a thin edge at the front, as shown in Fig. 4, so that parings, &c., passing up the side of the blade will not be caught under the guard.
In the blade, near and parallel to the back edge thereof and extending both within and beyond the handle, is formed a slot 10, through which passes loosely a pin or rivet 11, connecting and secured to the side portions 9 of the guard. The guard is limited in its sliding movement and also prevented from coming oif and becoming lost from the blade by the rivet passing through the slot.
It is evident that when in use the guard may be extended along the blade beyond the handle and then forms a convenient bearing for the finger or hand and that when not in use or when the blade is to be laid on a stone or steel to be sharpened the guard may be drawn Within the recess in the handle.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a knife, a handle, a blade, and a fin= ger-guard on the blade adapted to be retract= ed into the handle.
2. In a knife, a handle, a blade, a movable finger-guard on the back of the blade and a recess in the handle into which the finger guard is adapted to be retracted.
3. In a knife, a handle,- a blade, a slot in' the blade, and a finger-guard, having a projection engaging the slot, slidably mounted on the back of the blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
RUDOLPH KLICKMAN. Witnesses:
WM. J. ROBINSON, HARRY G. BATCHELOR.
