IMPROVEMENT IN BARRELS OB. GASES.
Me sa on match it in flgese itsttrrs 1am: nut nmlimg part at 11,12 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be itv known that I, OHRISTOPEER T. PROVOST, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrels, Kegs, etc.; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear,
and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make. and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,'forming part of this specification.
The drawing represents a'longitudinal sectional elevation of my invention.
This invention relates to a barrel, keg, or cnsk which is divided into two or more compartments by one or more partitions.
The object of this invention is to arrange barrels for holding beer, cider, and-other liquids, in such a manner that the said liquids may be kept free from'the injurious influence of the air, as long as they are in the barrel.
In private families, as well as in restaurants, it frequently occurs that cider or beer, kept for use in barrels becomes stale owing to the influence of the air, which enters the barrel to occupy the place vacated by the liquid drawn ofi. By the use of my invention only a portion of the contents of the barrel are thus exposed to injury, and will probably remain good, as they are only exposed for a portion of that time during which the contents of a whole barrel would have been exposed. The other part of the barrel remains sealed up until the first part is emptied.
This invention will afford great relief to small restaurants who do not use a whole barrel of beer or other liquid during a day. At present they are obliged to throw away what beer remains in the barrel at night. With my improved barrel they will be able to keep it over night, and so long as necessary, without having to fear that it will become stale. This barrel can beused for all liquids which are spoiled by being exposed to the air.
A represents a barrel of ordinary construction, being made of staves a a, heads I) b, and hoops cc, as shown, Between the headsb b is arranged within the barrel 2:. third head or partition, (2, by which the barrel is divided into two compartments. Each of these compartments should be provided with as many holes and bungs as are required in an ordinary barrel. If desired, two or more partitions may be arranged within the barrel, dividing the same into three or more compartments. The partition or partitions may be parallel with the heads 6, or at right angles with the same, as may be desired.
I'claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- Dividing the interior of a barrel, keg, or cask, into two or more compartments by means of partitions arranged within the barrel, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
