UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
NOYES JUSTIN SMITH, OF ATTLEBORO, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO' G. A. DEAN COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
CHATELAIN E-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of LettersPatent No. 681,934, datedSeptember 3, 1901.
Application filed June 14, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, NoYEs JUSTIN SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Chatelaine-Pins, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to an improvement in pins for supporting a series of articles connected to the pin.
The invention consists in the peculiar and novel construction whereby a watch and a series of articles may be connected. with the pin.
Figure 1 is a front view of the improved chatelaine-pin. Fig. 2 is a rear view of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional view showing the spring-wound watch-chain. Fig. 4 is a trans verse sectional view of the pin.
The object of the invention is to provide the chatelaine-pin with an extensible watchchain, so that a watch carried in the belt to which the chatelaine-pin is attached may be secured.
In the drawings, a indicates the face-plate; a, a circular recess or cavity in the back of the face-plate; b, a circular cap, the peripheral rim b of which extends into the cavity a; c, a perforated plate pivotally supported around the post 0, secured to the back of the cap I); d, a ring on the plate a; d, a spiral spring secured at one end to the post a and at the other end to the ring (1, and e a flexible chain secured at one end to the ring d, extending through the opening 19 in the rim b and secured to the watch-chain swivel. The faceplate a extends beyond the peripheral rim of the cap I), and the cap extends rearward beyond the face-plate sufficient to permit the free movement of the watch-chain. To the back of the cap 6 are secured the hinge g, on which the pin g is secured, the hook g and Serial No. 64,539. (No model.)
a number of loops 9 to which the pendants g are secured.'
To secure ready access to the interior for the adjustment of the spring or chain, the cap I) is provided with the lip b which enters an undercut in the cavity a and with the snap edge I) enters a depression or hole in the spring-post b.
The watch is secured to the chain-swivel f, and when the chatelaine-pin is secured, as usual, to the belt the watch is securely held against loss by the watch-chain. When the Watch is withdrawn for examination, the watch-chain is drawn out against the tension of the coiled spring and is automatically drawn in by the rotation of the ring d, operated by the coiled spring.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In a chatelaine-pin, the combination with the face-plate at, having the cavity a in the back of the face-plate, the cap I) detachably secured to and projecting beyond the back of the face-plate, the pin g pivotally secured to the back of the cap 17, a number of devices g and the pendants g 9 of the plate a, the fixed post a on the back, the ring d, the coiled spring d connected with the post a and the ring (1, the watch-chain e secured at one end to the ring cl, and the chain-swivelf secured to the other end of the Watch-chain, as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
N. JUSTIN SMITH.
