UNITEDv STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EZRA SMYTH, OF GREENCASTLE, INDIANA.
WRECKING-FROG.
SPECIFICATION forming'- part of Letters Patent No. 681,349, dated August 27, 1901.
Application iiled April 30, 1901. Serial No. 58,159. (No model.)
To all wiz/0772, it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, EzRA SMYTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greencastle, in the county of Putnam and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrecking-Frogs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to wrecking-frogs, and has for its object to provide a device of this class which is adapted to be used to replace cars upon the track after the same have by wreck or other cause been derailed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrecking-frog which can be easily and quickly set up under a car and which does not require any digging or otherwise disturbing the road-bed of the tracks.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrecking-frog lwhich will under all circumstances and conditions be held securely and rmly in place and which will not yield and slide under the weight of the rollingstock.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrecking-frog which is so constructed that a car or engine which has not been derailed can safely pass over said frogwithout being derailed.
A further object of my invention is to provide a wrecking-frog which is simple in its construction, positive in its action, and come posed of a minimum number of parts.
With all these objects in View my inven= tion consists in the novel construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and afterward speciiicall y pointed out in the appended claims. p
Referring to the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a plan view of my wrecking-frogs in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the outside frog. Fig. 3 is a crosssection through the same.
` Like numerals of reference indicate the saine parts throughout the several figures.
l represents the rails, and 2 the cross-ties.
3 is the outside wrecking-frog, composed of the horizontal platform 4, the vertical wall 5, the oblique vertical wall 6, and the inclined plane 7. Said horizontal platform extends over and rests upon the rail 1. Secured on top of said platform and extending some distance in front of the same is an inclined rib 8, tapering toward its rear. Secured to the inner side of said horizontal platform and to the said inclined rib is a vertical flange or Wall 9, which engages the inner side of the rail l. Secured on the top of said horizontal platform is a triangular plate 10, having a rearwardly and downwardly projection 11, said projection resting irlnly on the rail 1.
Secured on the face of the inclined plane 7 are three arched ribs 12, 13, and 14, the inner rib l2 having one perpendicular side and one curved side, the central rib 13 being vcurved or rounded on both sides, substantially forming a semi-ellipse in cross-section. The outer rib 14. is curved. on its inner side, the outer side of which is secured to the oblique vertical wall 6.
Secured in any substantial manner to the under side of the horizontal platform is a movable vertical plate 15, which is adapted to rest upon the base or foot of the rail and which is connected in anysuitable manner to threaded bolts, which are provided with handwheels or nuts, so that the same may be securely adjusted.
Along the bottom edge of the vertical wall 5 and the forward edge of the inclined plane 7 I provide a series of spurs 17, which are adapted to be buried into the cross-ties by the weight of the rolling-stock, thus securely holding the Wrecking-frogs from any longitudinal or lateral movement.
Referring now to the inside frog 18, it will be observed that in general form and construction it closely resembles the outside frog 3, with the exception that the rib 19 is not tapered and is beveled and inclined at both ends, while the triangular plate 20 does not extend to and over the rail.
The object of the inclined plane and arched ribs is obvious, and it will be seen that when my wrecking-frogs are in position a car can safely pass over same without danger of derailment on account of the inclined ribs S and 19. Furthermore, it is my intention to join the two frogs by any suitable means, should I so desire.
Having thus described my invention, I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact construction as herein set forth, as various slight changes might be made therein by those skilled in the art which would fall within the limit and scope of my invention, and I consider myself entitled to all such changes and modifications.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
l. In a railing device for rolling-stock for railroads, the combination of an outside Wrecking-frog, an inclined plane, a series of ribssecured thereon, a tapered inclined rib adapted to rest upon the top of the' rail, an inside Wrecking-frog on inclined plane, a series of ribs secured thereon, a rib inclined at both ends adapted to rest on top of the rail parallel with said rail, and independent from said ribs on the inclined plane and considerably above the same, spurs on the under side of said frogs, a vertical Wall engaging one 1Q side of the rail, a movable plate engaging the other side thereof, and means for adjusting said plate substantially as described.
2. In a wrecking-frog, the combination of the horizontal platform extending from the top of the rail an inclined plane formed thereto, a series of rounded ribs tapered at both ends secured on said inclined plane, a vertical Wall secured on said platform and engaging one side of the rail, a movable plate engaging the other side thereof and means for adjusting said plate, and means for holding the frog in position, substantially as described.
In testimony Whereof I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
