Beit known that I, ROBERT J. NICHOLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Thackerville, Chickasaw Nation, in the Indian Territory, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hay Stacking and Loading Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain lnew and useful Improvements in hay stacking and loading devices, the object of the invention being to provide means for erecting penannular stacks; and the same consists in the construction and arrangement of the parts, which includes a' crane, its supporting means, and a hay-fork, as will be hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a plan View showing the stack and the relative position of the crane thereto. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the crane, the stack being shown in section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the bases or anchors for the braces of the mast, and Fig. 4 is a sectional View of the step for the mast.
In carrying out my invention I locate at a point which will be the center of the stack a block A, having a step or bearingplate with a central perforation for the reception of a pin', which projects from the lower end of the mast. The block A is sunk into the ground and carries upwardlyeprojecting cheek-pieces, between which there is journaled a sheave c. The mast B, near its upper end, has a sheave Z) and between the sheave and support for the boom C steps c, so that the top of the mast will be accessible for the purpose of taking up or letting out the chain between the top of the mast and end of the boom to change the inclination of the boom, and thus regulate or determine the radius of the stack. The upper end of the mast is provided with a projecting pin having an eye which receives a Cotter-pin.

The boom C is made up of angle-iron and to the ends are secured filling-pieces C of the width of the flange, and through these lillingpieces and the web of the angle-iron is passed a pin for connecting the boom to the projecting pieces near the foot of the mast. The up per end of the boom is also filled out by plates c', which are bolted or riveted to the web of the angle-iron, and the web and flange are cut away to provide a space in which is positioned a pulley c2. The end of the boom has attached thereto a ring with eyes on opposite sides, and to the upper eye is attached a chain made up of long links, the opposite end being secured to an eye attached to a ring, which is carried by the upper end of the mast. A rope is attached to the eye at. the upper end of the boom and is passed through the pulley of the hay-fork or grapple, and from thence over a sheave c', and from thence to a sheave b to the pulley 'a on the anchorblock. The construction shown permits the boom to be swung in the arc of a circle and the grapple can be swung beyond the range of movement of the boom.
The grapple or hay-fork may be ofany im l proved construction, and is provided with a guide-rope g and a rope h for releasing the grapples. The guide-rope g can be used to move the boom over the point where it is de sired to deposit the hay or straw.
By means of the mechanism shown I am enabled to build or construct a penannular 4stack of any desired height or radius, and a stack so constructed has many advantages over those of the usual shapes-"for instance, the hay or straw can -be removed from the ends without changing its general shape, so 95 that two wagons can be loaded from the same stack at the same time. It also affords a IOO In building the stack-With a derrick constructed as described it is only necessary to raise the fork or grapple slightly above the height of the stack, and when the stack is built the crane or derrick may be used in loading the hay or straw upon Wagons. After the stack is built the boom may be swung against one of the stays and made fast thereto.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. In a hay-stacking device, the combination with a hay-fork, of a crane comprising a turning mast, stays for the same, a booin made up of T-iron the ends thereof below the Ilange having lling-pieces, `substantially as Shown.
2. In a hay-slacking device a crane consisting of a mast, its boom and braces, the boom and the braces being made up of T- iron, plates secured to the ends of the booml and the braces, and a fork connected to the end of the boom, substantially as shown.
3. In a hay-stacking device a crane consisting of a mast, a boom pivoted to the mast, a chain between the end of the boom and the top of the mast, braces which engage the mast and anchors, a hayfork connected to the end of the boom, a rope suitably guided for raising the fork, a guide-rope, and a releasingrope attached to the fork, substantially as shown.
