SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681,188, dated August 2'7, 1901.
Application filed August 2, 1900.
To all whom it may concern:
i 1 *Be it known that I, JOHN P. BROPHY, a-citizen of the United States, and a resident of Cleveland, county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Attachments for Automatic I Lathes, of which the following is a specification, the principle of the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so as to distinguish it from other inventions. 1 I My invention relates to attachments for automatic lathes, and particularly to devices for cutting off the work independently of the cross-slide, whereby the use of an extra tool is permitted and a piece finished in one operation of the lathe.
The annexed drawings and the following description set forth in detail certain mechanism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawings, Figure I represents an end elevation of said attachment, showing in addition lathe portions immediately adjacent thereto. Fig. II represents a top plan view of said invention, showing ad I jacent portion of said lathe; and Fig. III represents a front elevation of same. Secured to the frame A of the machine by l v means of suitable screws is a stationary support B-,'1ocated transversely with respect to the axis of rotation of the lathes head-stock. In said support is formed a slide-bearing b, p in which is located a bar 13', one extremity of I which is formed with a wedge 12'. The opposite end of said bar is formed with a contactbearingb upon which bears aroller c, mounted upon a rocker-arm C, pivoted upon the support B, as shown in Fig. I. Contact between said roller and the bar is maintained through the agency of a helical spring 11 .whose extremities are suitably secured to the support and bar, respectively. The free extremity of the rocker-arm C is provided with i .a roller which is engaged by a cam D, 3 mounted upon a rotatable shaft D, the rotation of which is effected through the medium ofsuitable connections with the lathes driving mechanism. formed in the support, in which a cutting-off tool 13 is located, so as to be reciprocable in a direction transverse with respect to the axis of rotation of the head-stock and with respect to the direction of movement of the bar 13. In the device illustrated the direc tion of movement of bar 13 is horizontal and that of the cutting-off tool vertical. The lower surface of Wedge b engages a rollerb, mounted upon said tool, contact between said wedge and roller being maintained through the agency of a helical spring I)", the extremities of which are secured to the sup port and tool, respectively. The shaft upon which the cam D is mounted is connected with driving mechanism (not shown) in a man ner such as to effect one revolution thereof in a period of time in which the work or head= stock is given a plurality of revolutions, whereby the cutting-oif tool is caused to operate upon the work after the manner usually employed in tools utilized for such purpose. One wall of said slide-bearing b is formed by an adjustable clamp 29", whereby tools of dif ferent thicknesses may be used.
"In operation the cam D is rotated, thereby effecting one reciprocating stroke of the bar B, the wedge upon the extremity. of which effects the down ward or feeding stroke of the cutting-off tool B Upon the recession of the cam D the spring 11 effects the return movement of the bar B, thereby permitting the spring 12 to effect the upward or return movement of the cutting-off tool B Other modes of applying the principle of my invention may be employed instead of the one explained, change being made as re gards the mechanism herein disclosed pro= vided the means covered by any one of the following claims be employed. v,
I therefore particularly point out and dis= tinctly claim as my invention- 1. In an attachment for automatic lathes, the combination of a stationary support, a reciprocable cutting-off tool mounted in said support, the direction of reciprocationbeing transverse relatively to the axis of rotation of the lathe head-stock, a reciprocable wedge adapted to engage saidtool to effect one reciprocating stroke thereof, a spring for efiecting the other stroke thereof, a cam for effect Ice ing one reciprocating stroke of the wedge and a spring for-effecting the other stroke-of said wedge.
2. In an attachment for automatic lathes, the combination of a stationary support, a reciprocable cutting-0E tool mounted insaid support, the direction of reciprocation being 1 transverse relatively to the axis of rotation of the lathe headstock, a reciprocating wedge located transversely of and adapted to engage the said tool, a spring connected with the latter adapted to maintain such engagement, a second spring connected with said wedge to effect one reciprocal stroke thereof, a lever adapted to engage said wedge and to effect the other reciprocal stroke thereof, and a cam
