CHARLES WV. LORD, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- I-IALF TO ORA E. CASE, OF SAME PLACE.
HAT-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,873, dated August 20, 1901.
Application filed June 1, 1901- Serial No. 62,750. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OHARLns W. Loan, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented acertain new and useful Improvementin Hat-Pins,of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of ornamental hat-pins which are provided with a vibrating head, and has forits purpose the ends commonly sought by such pins; but particularly I desire to overcome the weaknesses I 5 commonly inherent in these pins. Hitherto in constructing these pins the means employed have detracted from ornamental effeet by using an unsupported and uninclosed spiral spring carrying a practically-detached head. This hasfurther resulted in the break ing, bending, or straightening of the spring under tension. The desired ends are attained and the enumerated defects avoided by the structure hereinafter described, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a complete pin containing my invention; Fig. 2, a central vertical section of the head; Fig. 3, a similar view of the cap; Figs. 4 and 5, detail views of the spring and washer, respectively; and Fig. 6, a transverse central section of the pin-head body.
My improved pin is constructed as follows: Fixed to the top of the pin a is the body of the head 6, provided with an opening 0 in its top, which is slightly contracted, thus forming an inturned flange o. On the bottom of this cup-shaped body rests a spiral spring d, whose base is preferably of greater diameter than its top. This is held against displacement and disengagement by a washer a, provided with a central opening f, fixedly mounted in the head-body at a convenient distance above the base of the latter, through which opening the spring (1 passes. The upper end of the spring is secured to a conical cap g, provided centrally with a longitudinal cylin- 50 drical passage it, having a threaded interior The ornamental head member 7a has a threaded projection m,adapted to engage the threads t' of the passage in the cap above described, and when so engaged the hat-pin is complete.
It will be observed that the parts assembled as above allows the ornamental head member a freedom for lateral and rotary vibration or movement, while the inturned flange of the body member and the washer regulate and protect the spring from undue strain or bend- 6o ing. This construction keeps the ornamental head member so closely to its normal position that the pin-head quivers rather than swings, and thus attains the end sought in this class of pins perfectly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hat-pin head, the combination with abody member of a spiral spring resting upon the body-base, means intermediate the base and top of the body for retaining the spring,
a cap fixed to the upper end of the spring provided with a threaded opening, and an ornamental top provided with a threaded 7'5 projection adapted to engage in the threaded opening of the cap, as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a hat-pin head, the combination. with a body member of a spiral spring whose lower coils are of greater diameter than its upper resting upon the body-base, a washer intermediate the base and top of the body and fixed to the latter provided with an opening into which the spring fits, a cap fixed to the upper end of the spring, and an ornamental top engageable with the cap, as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a hat-pin head, the combination with a body member provided with an inturned upper flange, of a spiral spring mounted in the body member, a conical cap attached to the top of the spring and whose base is inclosed by the inturned flange, and an ornamental top engageable with the cap, as and 5 for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES W. LORD.
