SPANNER OR PIPE WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 680,742, dated August 20, 1901. Application filed March 15, 1901. Serial No. 51,256. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, DAVID STEWART, a citizen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 27 Thomson street, Govan, Lanarkshire, Scotland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spanners or Piperenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spanners or pipewrenches; and it has for its object to improve the construction of such tools, and particularly in reference to the mechanism for ad justing the jaws of the tool to fit various sizes of nuts or pipes.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the invention, Figure 1 is an elevation of the improved tool, and Fig. 2 a horizontal section of the same on the line a: 00 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an inverted plan of a detail of the ad justing mechanism hereinafter particularly referred to.
The tool consists of an arm or bar A, adapted to be gripped by hand and is of channel form in section, as shown particularly at Fig. 2, for the purposes hereinafter referred to. This bar A is provided at its upper end with a head B, the upper surface of which is preferably serrated, as shown, and the bar is further formed on one of its flanges with anumher-of worm-teeth O,with which gears a worm D, carried in a sliding bracket or sleeve E, embracing the bar, this sleeve having onthe inner surface of two of its walls projections E, which slide between the flanges of the channel-bar A and serve to guide and take up strain upon the bracket. The worm D is carried loosely upon a spindle F, pivoted between jaws E at the front end of the bracket E, the worm D being retained upon said spindle between the lower surface of these jaws E and the upper surface of jaws E into which the lower end of the spindle F passes. The lower end of the spindle F is retained in posit-ion within the jaws E by means of a clamping device G, pivoted upon the sliding bracket, the clamping device consisting, preferably, of a wire bent as shown at. Fig. 3 and adapted to engage a notch F near the lower end of the spindle F. A forked spring H is secured upon the lower edge of the sliding bracket E to normally hold the clamping device Gin engagement with the notch F. The
sliding sleeve E has also pivoted upon it the outer member I of the spanner or wrench, a spring J on the sleeve E bearing against the inner vertical surface of this member in order to retain its head, which is serrated on its under side normally away from the head upon the other member.
When the spanner or wrench is to be used, the spindle-retaining device G is depressed, so as to release its forward end from the end of the said spindle F, the spindle F being thereafter turned upon the pivot at its upper end in order that the worm may clear the teeth upon the flange of the hand-bar A. The bracket E is then moved so as to bringcloser or separate the grippingsurfaces of the spanner or rod or pipe-wrench approximately to the size of the nut or pipe to be turned, the spindle F being thereafter pressed into its position in order that more accurate adj ustment may be made by means of the worm to cause the gripping-surfaces to fit exactly the article to be turned.
An emergency-pin K is or may be pro- Vided on the bracket E, which will retain the spindle F in position should the retainingloop give way, and a stop-pin L is also provided on the upper jaw of the bracket E to prevent the spindle F from being turned so far out when disengaging the worm from the worm-teeth upon the bar A that the worm would drop oif said spindle.
Having now described the invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A spanner or pipe-wrench consisting of a main bar or hand-grip of channel form in cross-section, having the usual smooth or serrated gripping-head, and the outer surface of oneof its flanges formed with teeth, a sliding bracket or sleeve embracing the said bar and having projections upon it which slide between the flanges thereof, a spindle pivoted at its upper end in jaws in the said sleeve, a worm loosely centered on said spindle, a clamping device consisting of a looped wire pivoted on the sleeve and embracing the lower end of the worm-spindle, a spring bearing on the under side of the looped wire to retain it upon the end of the spindle, and an outer gripping-head pivoted on the sliding sleeve, and having its gripping-head nor :0 with a clamping device consisting of a looped wire pivoted on said sleeve and adapted to engage the lower end of the worm-spindle substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
DAVID STEWART.
