-UNITED STATES WILLIAM P.v COLDREN, OF LEBANON,
PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- IIALF TO GRANT F. LAUSER, OF SAME PLACE.
JAR-TOP.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of Letters Patent No. 680,125, dated August 6, 1901.
Application filed April 11, 1901.
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM P. COLDREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lebanon, in the county of Lebanon and State of Pennsylvania, have invented ce'rtain'new and useful Improvementsin Jar-Tops; and I do declarethe following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invent-ion relates to jar-tops, and more particularly to tops designed for use in connection with jars of the Mason type.
The object of the invention is to provide the ordinary metal top with a porcelain lin ing which can be easily and quickly removed to permit of the cleansing of the top at a point heretofore inaccessible. v
It is not generally known, but nevertheless it is a fact, that there is a considerable accumulation of juices between the met-al top and the porcelain lining, due mainly to the fact that it is nowa common custom after sealing a jar to invert it to ascertain if it is hermetically sealed. If hermetically sealed, there is no escape. If not hermeticallysealed, little bubbles will be seen forming between the edge of the top and the neck of the jar. This act of inverting the jar causes the juices 'to work down between the top and its lining, harden, and remain there. When it is desired to refill the jar, probably the next season, heretofore there has been no Way of cleansing the top immediately above the porcelain lining, and it is believed that ninety per cent. of the. spoiling or fermentation of the goods contained within the jar is chargeable to the uncleanly condition of the top.' It is the aim of the present invention to not only provide a removable lining forthe top, but also to provide means for securely locking the lining to said top against accidental removal or displacement; and withzthese objects in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is an inverted view of an ordinary jar-top, illustrating the application of my invention. Fig.
2 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view.
Serial No. 55,354. (No model.)
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the lining removed.
In the drawings, l denotes the metal top of the screw type, and 2 its porcelain lining. 55 Suitable means are provided for removably securing the lining within the top, and these means consist, preferably, in providing the top near its upper closed end with inwardlyprojecting studs 3, arranged at diametrically 6o opposite points and preferably formed by pressing the metal ofthe top inwardly. The lining is provided with a notch or recess 4, so as to enable the lining to be placed above said studs, and by giving it a slight twist or turn it will be prevented from dropping out of place. Now to prevent the lining from accidentally rotating with respect to the top, so as to register its notch or recess with one of the studs, and thereby allowit to d rop out 7e of place, I provide said lining on its lower face with an inclined lug, which after said lining'has been properly engaged with the top is turned over one of the studs, thus forcing said lining tightly upwardly against the Lipper end of the top and securing it in posi tion against accidental displacement. To facilitate the locking and-unlocking of the lining, any suitable means may be providedsuch, for instance, as forming it with an in- 8o tegral handpiece or rib 6.
AFrom the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of the invention will be readily understood without requiring an extended explanation.
It will be readily perceived that the lining may be easily and quickly removed and the top thoroughly cleansed before using it again, thus reducing to a minimum the liability of 9o the fermentation of the contents of the jar.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. The combination with a metal jar-top, of a lining therefor, the top having a screwthreaded iian ge for attachment to the jar and formed above the screw-threads with lugs, and a lining consisting of a disk located above the screw-threads and leaving them 10o exposed for attachment with the jar, said lining having a recess for engagement with one said lining with said top, and an inclined lug adapted to Work over one of said studs and frictionallylock the lining to the top,sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing'witnesses.
W. P. COLDREN.
