SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 689,888, dated December 31, 1901. Application filed April 26, 1901. Serial No. 57,608. (No model.)
To (Z5 whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that LFERDINAND KIROHHOFF, a citizen of the United States,residing at Manitowoc, in the county of Manitowoc and State of lVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Spark-Arrester, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to spark-arresters;
and it has for its object to provide a simple, efficient, and durable device of this nature particularly adapted for use in connection with the smoke-stacks of traction-engine boilers and which will act to completely extinguish the sparks and prevent any live sparks l 5 from passing from the smoke-stack.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification, and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views, Figure 1 is a vertical section taken transversely through the smoke-box of atraction-engine boiler and showing the application of the spark-arrester with respect to the steam-exhaust nozzle and the smoke stack. Fig. 2 is a vertical section of the spark-arrester, taken in the plane of its curvature.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a steam-boiler 5, at one end of which is the usual smoke-stack 6, leading from the smoke-box, the exhaust-pipe 7 from the engine operated from the boiler being taken inwardly through the side of the smoke-box and having a terminal nozzle 8, which is turned 3 5 slightly upwardly.
The spark-arrester consists of an arcuate plate 10, one end 11 of which is open, while at the opposite or upper end is formed a bulb 11, which acts to close the upper end of the channel 12, which is formed in the reentrant face of the plate 10 by bending said plate laterally into U shape, as shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings. There is thus formed an arcuate channel which is open at its lower end, and
the bulb at the upper end of which has an extension 13, which runs backwardly into and downwardly of the channel, so that a blast in passing upwardly through the channel will be deflected gradually outwardly and against the lower convex face of the bulb, from which it will spread laterally and upwardly. The spark-arrester is disposed so that its plane of curvature includes the axis of the outlet-oped ing of the exhaust-nozzle, said axis intersecting the chord of the arc of the plate at a point about one-third of the way from the lower end thereof and at an inclination so that the blast from the nozzle will enter the lower portion of the channel and will run upwardly therethrough and out against the bulb, where the steam will be thrown outwardly and upwardly, with the result that the sparks will be extinguished and the cinders will fall back into the smoke-box, from which they may be drawn in the usual manner.
It will be understood that in practice the arcuate plate may be set at any desired angle to the exhaust-nozzle and may have any desired curvature and that any suitable material may be used and proportions observed without departing from the spirit of the invention. A bolt 15 is provided for holding the arcuate plate in place.
WVhat is claimed is- 1. The combination with a smoke-stack of a spark-arrester consisting of an arcuate plate having a terminal deflector and an exhaustpipe to discharge toward the arr-ester.
2. The combination with a smoke-stack of aspark-arrester consisting of an arcuate plate having a longitudinal channel in its concaved face and a defiectorat one end of the channel and an exhaust-pipe to discharge toward the arrester.
3. The combination with a smoke-stack of a spark-arrester consisting of an arcuate plate having a terminal deflecting-bulb and an exhaust-pipe to discharge toward the arrester.
4. The combination with a smoke-stack of a spark-arrester consisting ofan arcuate plate having alongitudinal channel in its concaved face and a deflecting-bulb at one end of the channel and an exhaust-pipe to discharge toward the arrester.
5.
