IMPROVEMENT IN FRUIT-BOXES.

Be it known that LISRAEL F. BROWN, of New London, in the county of New London, and State of Conneoti'cut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Fruit-Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the follow ing is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art monks and use the same reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.

v The objects of the present invention are, first,,to eonstruct'a fruit-box in such manner as to avoid all or at least a great amount of the shrinkage of'ths wood of-which the box is made, the importance of which, not-only tothe seller'but to the purchaser of the fruit contained in it, is obvious; and second, to obtain a simple, cheap, and eflicient fastening device or devices from the bottom to the sides or other portions of the box. A, in the drawings, represents a. fruit-box made and constructed according to the present invention. This 'box A is made of e. thin veneer orstrip of wood' that at suitable points is sawed across its width, so that it can be bent at such points at right angles, and thus be susceptible of "being made into the form of a. square box, with one end of the strip thereto lapping over and upon the inside face of the other end, where, by means of fastenings B, suitably applied, the two ends are .secured together. The fastenings B are made of a narrow band of flexible sheet metal, that is bent at one end so as to forlna cross-ar1n, C, to suchend, one half of which is in two thicknesses.- To apply the fa-stenings B, the ,straight'portion F of the sume is first passed through a hole, E, made inthe sides ofthe box at the proper points, where-to be fastened together from the inside of the same toward the outside until its cross-arm comes against the box, when bend the acid straight portion up or down, so asto set over and about the upper or lower edge to the box, as the case may be. G, the bottom of the box, made of the same material as the sides, and sawedacro'ss its width, so that its two ends H can be bent up along the inside of the box, where, 'by means of fastenings B applied to the some it, is secured, asi'splainly shown in V the drawings. v
