PLOW.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 688,250, dated December 3, 1901.
Application filed May 23, 1901.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, WILLIAM H. HUNTER and CHARLES E. PEAVEY, citizens of the United States, residing at Washburn, in the county of Aroostook and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification. 1
Our invention relates to plows; and the object of the same is to construct a reversible plow which can be used as either a right or a left handed plow, as the slope of the ground may require, and be provided with means for looking it in the two positions and in intermediate position out of contact with the ground. This is accomplished by the simple and novel construction described in this specification and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side View of our plow locked in the center position. Fig. 2 is a side View used as a left-handed plow. Fig. 3 is a plan View of our device with the plow on the center. Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 5 is a fragmental section showing the catch and collar. Fig. 6 is a detail of the collar.
Like numerals of reference designate like parts in the difierent views of the drawings.
The numeral 1 designates the landside of our plow, which consists of a metal plate bearing a steel shoe 2, blunt and rounded out on its forward end at 3. Secured to the rear end of the landside is a pair of handles 4 of ordinary shape. A curved plow-beam 5 is detachably connected to the forward end and provides means for attaching horses in the usual manner. Arms 6 rise from the landside 1 and serve to support a shaft 7, journaled therein. This shaft 7 extends parallel to the landside and is journaled at its forward end in the rear end of the beam 5. It is fitted with two handles 7 for turning it.
Mounted to turn with the shaft 7 is a double moldboard 8, comprising two single moldboards 9 and 10, respectively right and left handed. These moldboards are made intogral and of a single piece of sheet metal slit- Serial No..6l.583- (No model.)
ted at 11. The double moldboard is connected to the shaft 7 by means of bracket-arms 12 and 13, keyed thereon. The bracket-arm 12 is connected to the forward end of the moldboards, while the arm 13 is bolted to the rear of the m oldboards. A collar 14 is keyed on the shaft 7 and bears three notches 15. These notches 15 are located one in the middle and one on each side and are adapted to be engaged by a catch 16, mounted on the landside 1 and provided with a string or wire 17 for operating it. Each of the moldboards 9 and 10 carrries a small pointed landside 18, which abuts the landside 1 and comes in alinement therewith when the moldboard is turned down in working position. A spring 19 surrounds the shaft 7 and assists in operating the plow.
In operation one of the moldboards is turned down until the landside 18 comes in alinement with the landside 1 and the catch 16 engages one of the side notches 15. In hauling the plow from place to place the moldboards are always looked on the center.
We do not wish to be limited as to details of construction, as these may be modified in many particulars without departing from the spirit of our invention.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and wish to secure by Let tors Patent, is-
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a landside, a shaft mounted longitudinally of said landside, a double moldboard keyed to said shaft, a notched collar keyed on said shaft and a catch arranged to engage the notches in said collar, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination of a landside, a curved beam connected to the forward end of said landside, an apertured arm rising from said landside, a shaft journaled in said arm and in the rear end of said beam, a double moldboard provided with apertured bracket-arms keyed 011 said shaft, a notched collar keyed. on said shaft, and a catch located to engage the notches in said collar, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the class described, the out hands in presence of two subscribing witcornbination with alandside, of a double moldnesses. bbard pivoted to said landside, and means for 1 WILLIAM H. HUNTER. locking said moldboard to hold it on either CHARLES E. PEAVEY. 5 side of said landside or on the center, su'b- Witnesses:
EDWARD THIBAULT,
stantially as described.
In testimony whereof wehave hereunto set 1 WILLIS B. HALL.
