STEAM-BOILER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 687,598, dated November 26, 1901.

T0 at whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, ROBERT H. BQTTS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Richmond, in the county of Contra Costa and State of California, have made certain new and useful Improvements in Steam-Boilers,'of which the following is a'specification.
This invention is an improvement in steamboilers, and has for an object, among others, to provide an improved construction of boiler which will have a large fire-surface, a small steam area, be of small weight, and be especially adapted for air-ships or locomobiles, although it may be employed wherever the generation of steam is desired.
The invention consists in'certain novel constructions and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal section of myimproved boiler. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view thereof, and Fig. 3 is a detail top plan view showing the burnerplate.
My boiler, as shown,comprises a plurality of sets of generating-chambers, each set being composed of a number of chambers concentrio with each other and composed of inner and outer tubes, which are spaced apart to secure the desired steam-space, pipes being provided for the circulation of water to supply the steam-chambers and for discharging the steam thence as desired.
In the construction shown the boiler is I employ in the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings six sets of generating-chambers, one set being arranged at the center and the other sets ranging around the central one in a circular series, as shown. As the sets are substantially alike, a description of one will answer for all, it being understood that each set is composed of a plurality of chambers D,concentric with each other and each composed of an outer cylinder 01 and an inner cylinder (1, spaced apart to form an annular space in which the steam may be generated as desired. Water is supplied at E to a central chamber E, from which extend radial pipes F, which extend through the several generating-chambers D, near the lower ends thereof, and are provided within said chambers with openingsf, through which water passes into the chambers. I provide on the pipe F between the generating-chambers a collar or washer F, which is located within the fire-space between the adjacent chambers, serving to space such chambers apart and also to receive the heat of the tire, and thus form a protective covering for the water-pipe. It will be noticed that I employ these pipes F in series radiating from the central chamber E and extending through the central set of generating-chambers into each of the outer sets ofchambers, as will be understood from Fig. 2. By this means I am able to supply water to the severalsets of chambers. It willbe noticed that the burners B are provided beneath each of the sets of generating-chambers, so that the latter will be properly heated in the operation of the invention. A steam chamber or drum G is located nearthe upperend of the generating-chambers and preferably within the central set of chambers, as shown in Fig. 1, and is provided with radiating pipes H, which extend through the chambers of the central and outer sets, as shown in Fig. 1, and are provided with openings h to receive the steam from the several chambers and with collars or washers 72, to space the adjacent chambers apart at their upper ends, the pipes F and H being substantially alike and arranged the one to supply water to the generating-chambers and the other to conduct the steam off from said chambers to the drum Gr, whence it may be discharged through the pipe G to any suitable point. Nuts H and F are provided on the outer ends of the tubes H and F and secure in place the anchor-straps I, whose lower ends are outturned at I and secured at I to the base A, thus anchoring the outer generating-chambers firmly to the base, as desired. A jacketJ fits around the generating devices and serves to protect the same and to retain the heat, as will be understood from Figs. 1 and 2. The water gage or glass Lextends outside of the jacket J and is suitably connected at L and L with ICC one of the set of generating-chambers, as will be understood from Fig. 1, and enables the operator to see at a glance the height of the water in the generating-chambers.
It will be noticed that a fire-space is provided at D between the adjacent generatingchambers of each set, so that the heat can circulate between the annular Water-holders or steaming-spaces, as will be understood.
The supply-tube for the hydrocarbon fuel is so arranged and coiled within the boiler as to insure the generation of gas before the fuel passes into the fuel-chamber, which is provided with the burners or jets B, as be fore described.
Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The improved boiler herein described, comprising the circular series of sets of concentric generating-chambers, the central set of concentric generating chambers, each chamber being composed of an inner and an outer tube,and heating-spaces being provided between the adjacent generating-chambers, and the water-chamber and steam-drum located within the central set of generatingchambers and each provided with radiating pipes extending through the chambers of the central and outer sets of generating-chambers and provided with openings communicating with said chambers whereby to supply the water thereto and discharge the steam therefrom, collars on said pipes between the adjacent generating-chambers, the burners below the sets of generating-chambers, the base, means for anchoring the sets of generating-chambers to the base, and the pipe for supplying the fuel to the burner, said pipe being coiled within the central set of generating-chain bers, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
2. In a boiler substantially as described, the combination of a central set of concentric generating-chambers, a circular series of sets of concentric generating-chambers ranging around the central set, and radial pipes extending through the central set of generating-chambers and through the outlying sets of generating-chambers and adapted to supply water to and discharge the steam from the several generating-chambers, substantially as set forth.
3. In a steam-boiler, the combination of a series of concentric generating-chambers and a pipe extending transversely through said chambers and provided with openings communicating therewith, substantially as set forth.
4. In a boiler, substantially as described, the combination of a central chamber, pipes radiating therefrom, and a series of sets of concentric generatingchambers through which the said radiating pipes extend, openings being provided in the pipes within the said chambers to permit communication, substantially as described.
the combination of a circular series of sets of concentric generating-chambers, a base below said series, central chambers within the circular series, pipes extending through said central chamber and transversely through the sets of generating-chambers and having openings within the said chambers to permit communication substantially as described, and anchor-plates held to the outer ends of said pipes and secured at their lower ends to the base whereby to anchor the sets of generating-chambers to the base, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination of a series of sets of concentric generating-chambers, a water-supply chamber centrally within said series and radiating pipes extending from said central chamber and communicating with the gencrating-chambers, substantially as set forth.
7. A boiler comprising a circular series of generating-chambers, a steam-drum located centrally within said series, and pipes radiating from said steam-drum and communicating with the generating-chambers of the series, substantially as set forth.
8. The combination with a set of circular chambers, the burner below the generating.
chambers, and the fuel-supply pipe leading through the central set of generating-chambers to the burner and coiled within the central set of generating-chambers, substantially as set forth.
10. A boiler comprising a central set of concentric generating-chambers, a circular series of concentric generating chambers ranging around the central set, and connecting-pipes between the central and outlying set of chambers and in communication with the chambers they intersect,'substantially as set forth.
11. A boiler comprising a central set of concentric generating-chambers having a central chamber or drum, a series of concentric generating-chambers ranging around the central set, and pipes extending between the central and outlying sets of chambers and communicating with the chambers they intersect and with the central drum of the central set of chambers, substantially as set forth.
