My invention relates to steam-boiler and other furnaces, its object being to provide a suitable construction adapted to bituminous and particularly slack coal for the more perfect combustion of the same under condi tions preventing the formation of smoke and for the automatic feeding of the fuel to the furnace.
My invention consists of the parts and the constructions and combination of parts hereinafter described and claimed.

Referring now to the drawings, A designates a trough with curved bottom and flaring sides, quite shallow at rear and deepening toward the front, placed centrally in the furnace at and below the normal grate-level, extending from the front rearward to ornear to the bridge-wall, the same being flanked at the side by grates g g, extending outwardly to the side walls of the furnace at a downward inclination.
The trough A is preferably constructed in three parts-namely, a bottom portion a and two side box-shaped portions constituting side chambers a a, suitably bolted together. The side chambers a a. are cast as box-shaped structures with closed ends, but open at the bottom and at the top. A removable slide a is placed to cover the bottom opening, resting upon ledges at opposite sides. of the chambers are connected across at the top by ribs 17, between which are fitted twyerblocks b, which complete the closure at the top, but permit air to flow from within the side chambers toward the center of the trough from opposite sides.
Into the front of the chambers a to enter the branches of an air-pipe 9 through which air is forced into the chambers by a blower or any convenient means, (not shown,) and, as already explained, the air issues thence into the body of the trough near the top edges at each side. 7
The trough A is connected at the front to a conduit-mouth B, flaring from a feed-cylinder B, situated beneath a hopper H. feed-cylinder B is fitted with a reciprocating plunger P, operated by a piston-rod p from a steam-cylinder C; To the plunger P is attached a sliding casing 00, which moves with it, covering the aperture of the hopper H at all times except when the plunger is withdrawn to allow a charge of coal to drop into the feed-cylinder from the hopper H in front.

Thefuel is fed into the trough A through the mouth B" at each forward reciprocation of plunger P, and the trough being always filled the excess overflows at each side upon the grates g 9, where it burns in the usual manner, fed by air from the ash-pit below. The combustion at the grates is communicated to the top layer of the overflowing body of coal in the trough, aided by the forced draft entering at opposite sides through the twyer-plates at the upper edges of the trough A. The heat of the combustion-chamber of the furnace gradually cokes the upper layers of fuel in the trough, and the principal draft being upward through the grates at the sides of the combustion-chamber the incandescent gases are drawn in outward spiral circles, returning toward the center at the upper part, as indicated by the arrows in the diagram, Fig. 6, thus effecting a more complete mixture and promoting thorough combustion before contact with the cooling-surface of the boiler and also thus preventing the forma- The tion of smoke. The feed apparatus consists of the steamcylinder C,with ordinary reciprocating piston, and a slide-valve c, controlling admissionports 0 0 The valve 0 is independently moved by a double piston 61, operating in cylindrical extensions of the valve-chamber,constructed in the ordinary manner. Steam for the supply of the main cylinder 0 is admitted through the valve-chamber between the ends of the double piston d, whose speed of movement is regulated by a double dash-pot D, of ordinary construction, at the forward end of its extended pistonrod (1. Where, as in the illustration, the valve-chamber and valve are arranged beneath the steam-cylinder O, the slide-valve c is upheld against its seat when not under steam-pressure by springs in any convenient manner. Steam is admitted to reciprocate the double piston 61 by ports 0 0, controlled by a slide-valve e,operated through lever mechanism by a block 3 upon the main piston-rod and suitably-arranged tappet-fingers s .2 near the extremities of its stroke.
The ports 0 0 for admitting steam to opposite ends of the steam-cylinder 0, also the ports 0 o for admitting steam to opposite ends of the double-piston valve-mover d, are each controlled bya perforated plug or regulating-valve f, suitably arranged to regulate the force applied in order that the rapidity of feed of coal to the furnace may be varied to suit varying conditions. The reciprocatory passage of the dash-pot D is similarly provided.
The modus operandi of the apparatus has been suffioiently indicated. Its construction is such that it may with little trouble be applied to existing structures, and it has been found in practical use to give efficient results and involve but little trouble in maintenance. The trough-bottom and side chambers to being separate castings, either part may be renewed without disturbing the general structure. The open bottom of the side chambers,
with removable cover-plates a enables the attendant to readily discharge any accumulation of ashes into the ash-pit below. The length and flaring mouth of the feed-cylinder B effectually prevent any back draft of smoke or gases through the same into the boilerroom, while the upwardly-inclined bottom of the trough A insures the ultimate emptying of all the contents upon the grates g.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States-- 1. In a steam-boiler or other furnace, the combination of a trough having a curved bottom and flaring sides, said trough made shallow at the rear and increasing in depth to- Ward the front and extending from the front rearward to or near the bridge-wall of the furnace, side grates flanking the upper edges of the trough and extending outwardly to the side walls of the furnace, at a downward inclination, a feedcylinder having a flaring feed mouth connecting directly with the deeper portion of the trough, a steam-actuated plunger adapted to reciprocate in said mouth, a fuel-hopper connecting with said mouth and means for regulating the movements of the plunger.
2. In a device of the character indicated and in combination with fuel-feeding appliances, a fuel-trough having a bottom inclinin g upwardly toward the rear,air-boxes bolted to the sides of the trough, said trough having its bottom transversely curved and connecting the side boxes and said boxes having controllable openings in their lower portions, and means whereby air is permitted to flow from within said-boxes toward the center of the trough from opposite sides.
3. In a'device of the character indicated, the fuel-trough, the air-chambers on each side thereof and closed at the ends and open at the top and bottom, and a removable slide controlling said bottom opening.
