'ro ALL wHoM 1T MAY ooNCERN:
.f Be itlmown that I, SAMIiEL F. CLARK, of Middletown, in thecounty nf Middlesex, and State of Connecticut,
have invented a. new and useful Safety-Stirrup; and I dolhereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
Figure 1 is u side view of the stirrup.
Figure 2 is a rear view of the same.
Like letters refer to similnr parts in the several figures.
Myinvention'consists in furnishing the front `part of the stirrnp with bars, a a a, which are so arranged as to prevent the foot by any possibility being pushed inso fur to get caught in the stirrup, and also in providing asole, Xb, to the stilrup with a. pivot or hinge, c, so that it can necommodate itself' to the position of therfoot. The bars a a of which there may be three or more, are attached to the top of the stirrup and to a horizontal band, d, conuected'at its rear ends with the upright sides e. This baud d pnsses outside of the sole b, and is furnished lwith a projecting ledge or shelf, f, to receive the edge of the sole b :ind stop its farther motion downward. This prevents any opening through the bottom of the stirrup into which thefoot might slip. The sole b is made separate from the frame of the stirrup, und is jointed to it by the hinge-jointes. It `can turn upwards as far as desired, but is stopped when pressed downwards by the shelf or stop f. It is so constructed in connection with the frame of the stirrup that when in use the forward end will be elevntedsomewhut above the position shown in the drawings, so that it will turn easily with the motion of the foot. i
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi 1. The combination ofthe ban-s a with the horizontal band d and the upright part e, substantially as described.
9.A The combination of the pivoted sole b with the band d and sides e, substantially as described.
The combination of the bars a, the band d, the sole b, and the upright sideswe, the whole forming a safetyst-irrup substantiallypas herein described.
ySAMUEL F. CLARK.
