T. MADDEN.
MILK FAIL HLDER.
(Appl t nfudmm 14 1901) (No Model.)
W' asses STATES PATENT OFFICE.
TIM MADDEN, or INSTITUTE, WISCONSIN.
MILK-PAH. HOLDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 685,998, dated November 5, 1901. Application tiled June 14, 1901. Serial 110.612,605. (No model.)
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TIM MADDEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Institute, in the county of Door andState of NVisconsin, have invented a new and useful Milk-Pail Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to milk-pail holders, and has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which is adjustable for application to pails of different sizes and is constructed to be supported upon the knees or thighs of a milker, thereby to obviate the necessity of pressure against the sides of a pail to hold the same. It is furthermore de"- signed to provide means for securing the device to the upper marginal edge of a pail, so as to prevent displacement thereof, especially should the pail be supported with its bottom upon the ground.
With these and other objects in View the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts, as will be herein-v after more fully described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes in the form, proportion, size, and minor details may be made within the scope of the claims without departingfrom the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective View of a pail-holder embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view thereof applied to a milk-pail.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts in both of the figures of the drawings.
In carrying out the present invention there is provided a fiat split metallic band l, which has its opposite ends overlapped, the outer end portion being provided with a terminal clip 2, that slidably embraces the opposite edges of the inner end portion, and is also provided with a longitudinal slot 3 for the slidable reception of a screw-threaded pinet, carried by the inner end portion of the band, there being a winged nut 5 applied to the outer projected end of the pin, whereby the size of the band may be readily adj usted for application to pails of dierent sizes. At substantially diametrically opposite points on the band there are provided the outwardly-directed arms or supports (3 to rest'upon the knees of the milker, each support being formed from a single metal rod, which is bent into substantially U shape, with its opposite end portions bent downwardly at substantially right angles to the plane of the support, thereby to form the attaching-Shanks 7, the terminals of which are flattened and riveted or otherwise secured to the outer side of the band.
As indicated in Fig. 2, the band is designed to snugly embrace a pail 8 at any preferred point thereon, the voverlapped ends of the band being adjusted to fit the band to the pail, either at the upper beaded edge thereof, as shown in the drawings, or at a lower point, as may be desired. WVhen the holder has thus been applied, the pail is placed between the knees in the usual manner, with the arms or supports resting transversely across the knees, whereby the pail is conveniently supported in the ordinary'position without requirin g that the knees be pressed against the sides of the pail to hold the same, thereby relieving the milker of strain.
To obviate displacement of the holder, there is provided a clamping device, consisting of an upright pin 9, having its upperend formed into a suitable linger-piece l0 and its lower end bent into a loop l1 to form a laterallyprojected foot to rest upon the upper edge of the band, and thereby support the pin in an elevated position, as shown in Fig. l, so that the pin may not obstruct the interior of the band when it is being applied to a pail. For the support of the pin there is provided a bracket 12, which is formed from a single piece of sheet metal, one end portion of which braces one of the shank members of one of the laterally-projected supports 6, and the opposite end portion is bent `intoa sleeve or eye 11i for the endwise slidable and rotatable reception of the intermediate portion of the pin. After the band has been applied to a is formed into a sleeve 13, that snugly ern` IOO clamped together, so as to avoid looseness of the pail within the holder and to preventthe latter from dropping downwardly from the pail should the latter' be supported with its bottom upon the ground or other support.
It will be seen that the bracket, which is provided with inner and outer sleeves 13 and 14, is adapted to swing horizontally to carry the slidable pin away froml the ring to permit the milk-pail to be placed therein and that after J[he pail has been placed in lthe ring the bracket is adapted to be swung inward to arrange its outer sleeve over the pail to permit the pin to engage the latter.
That is claimed is- Il. A milk-pail holder comprising a band provided with arms or supports and arranged to receive and support a milk-pail, and a locking device hinged at a point above the band and arranged to swing horizontally to carry itover the pail after the latter has been placed in the band, said locking device being also capable of vertical movement to engage it with and disengage it from the pail, substantially as described.
2. A milk-pail holder, comprising a band, opposite outwardly-directed supports, and. a pail-engaging fastening consisting of an end- Wise-slidable pin arranged vertically and mounted at the top of the band to be projected transversely across the inner side ol' the band, and constructed to clamp a pail between the pin and the band.
3. A milk-pail holder comprising a ring, knee-engaging supports, a bracket provided with inner and outer sleeves, the inner sleeve embracing one of the knee-supports, whereby it is hinged to the same and is adapted to swing horizontally, and the outer sleeve forming a guide, and a sliding locking device mounted in the outer sleeve and adapted ro engage a milk-pail,substantiallyas described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as myown I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
TIM MADDEN.
