To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ALFRED WIEHL, a citi- Zen of the United States, and a resident of New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Artists Palettes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention refers to artists palettes; and the objects of the invention are to provide means for so detachably securing the tubes or receptacles containing the difierent kinds of pigments or paints, oils, &c., to the palette that while they shall not obstruct the upper surface thereof orinterfere with the proper and convenient handling of the palette by theartist it may be possible to readily introduce from said tubes pigments upon the upper surface of the palette without in any way changing the position of the same.

Further objects are to so attach a series of color tubes to a support or frame that the proper attachment of said frame to the palette will place all said tubes in their proper operative positions and that upon detaching said frame said tubes will maintain their positions upon said frame; also, to provide suitable and simple means for closing the dis charge-outlets of said tubes without obstructing the upper surface of the palette and to so arrange and construct the closing devices that they may be operated readily, whether the frame carrying the color-tubes be attached to or detached from the palette.

Further objects are to'provide for alternately attachingto said frame and to the palette color-tubes having screw-threaded necks of different diameter.

Another object is to provide proper supporting means for the palette, so as to permit of placing and maintaining its upper surface at such elevations and inclinations as may appear desirable, and thus relieving the artist of the necessity of supporting the same on his arm without, however, making it impossible for him to do so when proper occasions for it may arises I" accomplish these and other useful objects by the means hereinafter described, and set forth more particularly in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, and wherein corresponding reference letters and figures refer to threaded necks of different diameters.

In the drawings, 5 is an artists palette of the usual general configuration and forming a platform for receiving the pigments. The same may be made of any proper material, such as wood or metal. In said drawings I have assumed the same to be made of iron or steel and to be provided on its upper surface with enameling 6 for the purpose of protecting the metal against injurious chemical action by the pigments and colors applied to it. I prefer to make this enameling white in color, so as to have very thin or transparent colors applied to it appear thereon in their proper shades.

7 is'an arc-shaped frame forming a part of my improved palette and secured to palette 6 at its under side by screws 8 s. Palette 6 is provided with a series of perforations p and said frame with perforations p, which are screw-threaded, so as to receive there either directly the screw-threaded necks of flexible color-tubes 8, or to receive instead exchangeable screw-nuts, as n, screw-threaded on the inside and on the outside. Such screw-nuts are to be used principally where it is desired to attach alternately color-tubes having screwimparting squeezing pressure to said flexible color-tubes the pigment or coloring may be forced upward and through perforations 1) upon the adjoining surfaces of the palette. For the purpose of normally closing the outlets of the color-tubes I provide sliding covers 9 for the same. Said covers are let'into the upper portion of frame 7 and are slotted so as to engage with pins c'on said frame,which serve as guides as well as stops for the slides. I prefer to make the longitudinal edges of said slides dovetail with the corresponding edges of the recesses in the frame for the purpose of securing the covers properly to said frame at all times, and particularly after the latter has been detached from the palette. it represents handles for actuating said slides.

The are shaped configuration given to frame 7 makes it best conform to that edge of the palette which is at the greatest distance from the artist while he is using the palette, and said configuration gives strength to it without unduly increasing its weight. Besides it permits of placing the holes in the palette near such edge and makes the slides for closing the color-tubes readily accessible from said edge.

It is desirable to be able to fixedly support the palette at varying elevations and inclinations, so as to make its use convenient for the artist when working on difierent parts of a large painting, and to also be able to sup port the palette directly upon the arm of the artist in usual manner. For such purpose I provide the following supporting means for the palette: 11 is a sphere attached to the central portion of its under side and,together with cheeks 12 and 13, forming a universal joint of usual construction. Cheek 12 is made integral with shank 14:, which extends downward therefrom and which terminates in a tube 15. Shank 16 on cheek 13 is attached to shank 14 by set-screw 17, whereby the palette may be given any desired inclination with refer ence to said tube and may be maintained in such position.

18 is a post, preferably constructed as a tube telescoping with tube 15, as well as with tube 19, which latter terminates at its lower end in foot 20.

21 and 22 are set-screws for maintaining the respective telescoping parts in their proper tending outward from the lower portion of:

tube 19. Said casing is divided by vertical partitions 28, so as to form therein several compartments suitable for receiving bottles containing oil or other liquid required by the artist, a sectional cover 29 being provided for said casing. When the artist wishes to support the palette upon his arm, he has only to loosen screw 21 and detach tube 15 from tube 18.

Without an arrangement as described and following the old mode of procedure the artist before commencing to paint applies all the different pigments which he is likely to use to the palette, so as not to be obliged to interrupt his work whenever a new pigment must be selected from the large number on hand for the purpose of applying it to the palette. This leads to waste of color and to the deterioration of such color as remains upon the surface of the palette for a long time, while under the arrangement above described the artist need not apply each pigment until actually required, and can then find and apply the same without difficulty or delay.

It will readily be seen that the arrangements and the details above described might be varied in many respects without departing from the spirit of my invention. Thus the flasks or tubes containing the various kinds of pigments need not necessarily be attached to frame 7 on the palette by screwthread; but I prefer the latter arrangement, as I can thus utilize the screw-thread commonly provided on the necks of flexible colortubes to which the cap usually serving to close said tube is attached. It will also be seen that the use of frame 7 might be dispensed with, in which case the color-tubes would have to be attached directly to the perforations in the palette; but I prefer the arrangement as illustrated, because the same permits of simultaneously detaching all the color-tubes from the palette as may become desirablefor instance, when the artist wishes to employ the palette in connection with an entirely different character of paintmg.

I claim--- 1. The combination with an artists palette having a suitable perforation, of a receptacle for containing pigment, or other liquid or semiliquid, attached to the palette beneath its upper surface, and having its outlet com municating with such perforation, and means for projecting such liquid therefrom upward through said perforation. I q

2. The combination with an artists palette having a suitable perforation, of a flexible tube for containing pigment or other liquid or semiliquid, attached to the palette beneath its upper surface and having its neck extend ing into and tightly secured to said perforation.

3. The combination with an artists palette having a screw-threaded perforation, of a flexible tube for containing pigment or other liquid or semiliquid, extending downward from the palette and having its screw-threaded neck in engagement with screwthread on the walls of said perforation.

4. The combination with an artists palette having a suitable perforation, of a flexible tube for containing pigment or other liquid or semiliquid, attached to the palette beneath its upper surface and having its neck extending into and tightly secured to said perforation,and a slide mounted upon said palette for closing the outlet of said tube.

5. The combination with a sectional artists palette comprising an upper platform, pro vided with a suitable perforation and a frame detachably secured to its under side and pro- Vided with a corresponding perforation, of means for attaching a color-receptacle to said frame, and a device for closing the perfora tion in said frame interposed between said frame and said platform.

6. The combination with a sectional artists palette comprising an upper platform provided with a suitable perforation and a frame detachably secured to its under side and provided with a corresponding perforation, of means for attaching a color-receptacle to said frame, a slide for closing the mouth of said receptacle interposed between said frame and said platform, and a stop for limiting the movement of said slide.

7. The combination with asectional artists palette comprising an upper platform provided with a suitable perforation and a frame detachably secured to its under side, of a screw-nut inserted in said frame having its perforation screw-threaded and corresponding in position with the perforation in said platform.

8. A sectional artists palette comprising an upper platform, an arc-shaped frame detachably secured to the outer portion of said palette, a series of perforations being provided in said platform and a series of corresponding perforations in said frame, and means for securing color-receptacles to the perforations in said frame. a

9. The combination with an artists palette of a telescoping stand for supporting the same, and a universal joint between said stand and said palette.
