IMPROVEMENT IN PRINTING-PRESSES.
TO ALLKWHOM IT MAY CONCER-N:
Be it known that I, LOUIS Tnnononn Vnnn'nr, of Paris, France, have invented certain Improvements in Printing-Presses; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists in certain improvements, fully described hereafter, in that class of-printing-prcsses in which'the design is transfcrrcdfrom.an engraved or etched roller to the paper. l
In erder to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this specification, and in whiehi p Figure 1 (Drawing No. I) is a sectional elevation of my improved printing-press.

Adjacent to the ends of the roller El arcrtwo segmental plates, F F, through which the shaft E passes, and to each of which are connected the upper ends of two parallel rods, dd, the lower ends of the latter having screw-threads on the same, passing through a block, F2, and being provided with nuts for regulating their position in'respect to the said block. In suitable bearings secured to thebase-plate B turns a shaft, a3, to one end Aof which is secured a handle or lever, ct, a cam, a5, on the said shaft, bearing against the under side of a cross-piece of the frame F". G, through the rear endof which passes a roller, L, the latter turning in bearings in the frames F F1; and in the said rollerfis a spiral groove, y, of such a character that as the roller'revolves a continuous reciprocating mot-ion on the rod h will beimparted to the slide. To the rear end of the slide is connected a cup or reservoir, H, a' hooked projection, j, at the oppositie side of which rests upon a rod, h2, connected to the frames F Fl, and near each end of the said rod is an inclined projection, 7c, for a purpose described hereafter'. In the reservoir II turns a roller, l, the shaft of which is geared with that of a roller, Z1, beneaththe box, and which rests on the uppermost of the rollers f1, andiat the outside of the box turns a series of rollers, l? Z2, which revolve in contact with each other, the lowest roller hearing against the rollerlI and the highest against the roller Z, as shown in tig. 1. Against the roller lbears an adjustable plate, m, and from the end of theprojection j is suspended a. vessel, m1, at the lower end of which is a pipe having two outlets or branches and a cock. To each of the frames F F1 ,is hung a lever, n, one end of which bears against the end of one of the journals of the upper rollerfl, while the other end is in such a position as to he struck by the reservoir H when it is at the limit of its movement in either direction. To a bar, I, which rests upon the roller El, and slides inthe side frames F It, is secured a sponge or strip cf felt, and at each end of the bar is a pin which projectsinto a scroll-groove in the edge of a cam-wheel, J, secured tothc shaft E. In guides on the side frames A Al slides a plate, K,
and on arms projecting from the inner edge of the plate are lugs p j), fig. 4, so arranged as to be struck 'by lugs p2 on the wheels J J, asthc latter revolve, the plate being thus carried towards the roller E1. To each sido v frame is hung a lever, L, one end of which is connected to a rod, L1, attached to the plate K, and the other end ofA which is adjacent to the outside of one of the wheels J, and on the latter is a pin, 1, which, as the wheel revolves, strikes and depresses the lever L, and .thus lmoves outward the plate K. I To the upper side of thel plate K are secured twoadjustable L-shapcd plates, M M, andto each ofthe latter are secured two adjustable guides or gauges, r s. end of the plate N projects over a lever, O, which is hung -to the face of the plate K, and the inn-cr end of which, when thcplate is at the limit of its inward motion, is in contact with the projection on the roller E1. Inthc frames A A1 turns a shaft, I, from which `project arms a u1, the latter being weighted at the outer ends, and to the former is secured a plate, 111, which bears against the under side of the plate K, and the inner edge of which is adjacent to the roller01. To a shaft, Q, turningin the side frames, are secured grooved pulleys o v and a roller, Q1, and round the latter is wrapped a cloth, X, which passes over the roller C1 and is secured at the opposite end to the shaft a1, a cylindrical bar or roller X1, lying within thc fold of the cloth and main' taining the latter taut, as shown in iig. 1. Co-rds w, which pass round and are secured to the pulleys o, are attached at their lower ends to levers R, which are depressed by springs e, so that when the roller Q1 is turned in the direction of its arrow by the cloth being drawn towards the rollers C1, the springs z will tend to turn the roller Q1 back to its rst position. The plates M N i s are so adjusted that a sheet to be printed on, `when placed between the projections t t, with its front edge against the plates 1' r, will be in a proper position to bc presented to the printing-roller, the pins t1t1 passing through the paper and perforating the same, so that, should it be necessary to pass the sheet a second time'through the press, it maybe adjusted to precisely the same position it first occupied. The box H is filled with printing-ink and the vessel m1'with water. The parts of the machine are brought to the position shown in fig. 1, and a rotary motion in the direction of its arrow is imparted to the driving-shaft D1, when the operations of the machine will be as follows:
VThe reservoir H will be carried-back and forth, and as it approaches each side ot' the machine, 'will strike the lever n, which is thus turned so as to move the roller f1laterally to a slight extent. As the roller Zrevolves the ink in the box H will be transferred to the rollers Z2 Z1, and from the latter to the rollers f1f1, the' lateral motion imparted to the upper roller`f1 insuring the even distribution of the ink upon the other rollers. As theV reservoir approaches .the limit of its motion in either direction the projection 7' will pass on to one of the inclined plates 7c, and will be elevated with the reservoir, so thatithe roller Z1 will not strike the end of the upper roller f1 as the reservoir begins to pass towards'the opposite side of the machine. As the vessel m1 is carried back and forth with the reservoir H, water will be discharged on to the lrollerf, andwill be transferred` from the latter to the surface of the plate E?, over which it will be evenly distributed bythe action of the fclted4 bar I. After the n'k has b'eendeposited upon the plate E2, that upon the surface of the plate will be removed .by the action of'therollerfg. As the roller E1 revolves the projectionsp on the wheels J J will be brought in contact with the projections p1 on the plate K, and the latter will be carried inward until lthe edge of the paper is intro duced between the two rollers E1 C1, the plate P1 guiding the paper between the rollers, when the .levers O O (the inner ends of-which are depressed by contact with the projections Il) will raise the plate N and lift the paper off the Apins t1, so that it may be carried forward between the rollers while the plate K is moved back to its rst position by the action of the pins g upon the levers L. As the plate passes between the rollers it will be pressed firmly on the cloth X, and will receive the ink from the' lines in the plate E2, the cloth passing over the roller C1 with the paper. After the paper has been discharged, and when the projections Z1 are brought against the roller C1, tbc roller E1 will lie-slightly raised from the roller'C1, so that the cloth may be relieved from pressure, when it'will be drawn back on to thc roller Q1, as before. Should it be` necessary at any time 4to raise the roller E1, in order to extract a sheet from .between the rolls, the cani ai is turned so as to raise theV frame F, and with it the lever E3, block F, rods d CZ, side pieces F F1, and their rollers. l
l It will be seen that by the use of an cngraved,'lexiblc sheet of metal the necessity `of renewing the printing-roller every time the design is to be changed is avoided, it only being necessary to remove thesheet E2 from the roller E1, and to secure another in its place'.
The devices shown in tig. 5 may be substituted. for those described for turning back the roller Q1 when the cloth is to bc re-wound upon the same. In this case each cord w is secured to one end of a lever, W1, the opposite end of which is connected by a rod, v1, to the end of a bell-crank lever, 'Y1. A projection, u1, on the shaft E, is so arranged as to strike the short arm of the lever Y1 when the clothy has to be drawn back, the levers being thus carried to su'ch a position as to withdraw the cord from the pulleys o v and turn back the roller Q1 i-n the direction of its arrow. 1 v
Without confining myself'to the precise'eonstruction and arrangement of parts herein described, I claim as my invention, and-desire to secure by Letters Pat-cnt- 1. The plate K, its projections j), levers L, and connecting-rods L1, in combination with the shaft E, cylinder E1, 'projections p2 andr, the whole being constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as setforth.
2. The adjustable guides 7*, pins t and t1, plates N, and levers O, arranged on the plate K, and operating 4in connection with the cylinder E1, substantially as and for the purpose specfied.
3. The traversing ink-reservoir H, its rollers Z Z1 l?, in combina-tien with the inking-rollersf1, substantially as described. i'
4. The combination of the above, the sliding-rollerf1, and levers n 11, the whole being arranged :1nd operating substantially as specified. v
5. The vibrating bar I, operating' in combination with the eylinder El and its plate E2, substantially es set forth.
