ISAAC RAUSCH, OF BLACK RIVER FALLS, WISCONSIN.
LBFTER.
SIEGIFIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,718, dated October 15, 1901.
Application filed March 11, 1901. iierial N01 501679. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ISAAC RAU'soH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Black River Falls, in the county of Jackson and State of Wisconsin ,h ave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifters; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to lifters to be used for lifting stove-lids or plates or pans.
The object of the invention is to provide a household implement of this character which shall be simple of construction, durable in use, comparatively inexpensive of production, and extremely useful for the purpose for which it is designed.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, which will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularlypointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved lifter. Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view through the lifter, slide, and locking key or wedge. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the locking key or wedge, and Fig. i is a detail perspective View of the slideand its clamping-jaw.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a bar or rod of suitable length and proportions and provided at one end with a stove-lid lifter 2 and with a fixed jaw 3. The fixed jaw is preferably formed of wire in the shape of a double hook and is secured to the bar or red in any suitable manner with the hook ends projecting inwardly. idenotes a slide mounted to slide upon said bar or rod, and 5 denotes a sliding jaw, which projects downwardly from said slide. The slide 4. and jaw 5 are preferably shaped from a single piece of wire and locked in position by a key or Wedge 6, which is interposed between the slide and the rod or bar and is provided with a stop 7 to prevent its accidental engagement over the parts and with a thumb-piece 8, by means of which it is operated. The jaw 5 has a shape corresponding to that of the jaw 3, the hooked ends projecting toward the hooked ends of the jaw 3. r
The operation of the stove-lid lifter is obvious and needs no explanation, I
The operation of the device when used. for
lifting pans or plates is as follows i The inner end of the bar or rod is grasped in the hand, the fixed jaw engaged with the side or edge of the pan or plate, and with the thumb against the thumb-piece of the wedge the sliding jaw and wedge are forced toward the opposite side or edge of the pan or plate, and when the sliding jaw engages therewith a continued downward pressure of the thumb against the wedge firmly binds said wedge in the slide, and thus automatically clamps the jaws to the pan or plate. To release the lifter from the pan or plate, the thumb is placed over the thumb-piece of the wedge and the wedge drawn in the opposite direction to that described, thus loosening the wedge in its connection with the bar and slide and at the same time allowing said slide and its jaw to be retracted and the plate to be released.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,- the construction, mode of operation, and advantages of my invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.
Various changes in the form, proportion,
and details of construction may be made with in the scope of the invention without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a lifter of the character described, the combination with a rod or bar having a fixed jaw, of a slide consisting of a piece of wire bent to partially surround the rod or bar and having its ends terminating in a jaw to cooperate with the first-named jaw, and a wedge interposed between said slide and bar and having a movement relatively to the slide and bar, said wedge having a stop which is adapted to coast with said slide in the independent movement of the wedge and cause said slide to move in unison with said wedge, said wedge being also provided with a thumbpiece by means of which it is operated, sub stantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
, ISAAC RAUSOII. Witnesses:
