MARTIN PRIOR BOSS, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
BOlLER.
SBECIEIGATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,598, dated October 15, 1901.
Application lcd February 2, 1901. Serial No. 45,734. (No model.)
.T0 all who-m t may concern:
Be it known that I, MARTIN PRIOR Boss, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boilers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to that class of boilers known as vertical water-tube boilers.
The object of my invention is to provide efficient circulation and of such a nature that the feed-water injected thereinto is at once thoroughly heated and the salts and sediment are well precipitated before the Water reaches the tubes.
These ends are attained by the construction and relative disposition of parts, which I shall now fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which@ Figure lis a vertical front elevation of the boiler with its setting-walls in section. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of same. Fig. 3 is a top plan.
A is a vertical cylinder or drum having projecting from and communicating with it above and below the horizontal boxes or chambers B B', between which extend the vertical tubes C, which are exposed to the fire from one or more sides. The boiler-setting may be so arranged as to have the iire near the lower portion of the tubes and extend upwardly, or, as here shown, the preferable form is to have the lire near the upper portion of tubes and extend downwardly. Accordingly the setting D is so made as to have the fire-chamber E about the upper portion of the tubes, and thence the setting-walls extend downwardly, forming a iiue, preferably a zigzag one e, about the lower portion of the tubes, terminating in a bottom flue c sufliciently capacious for the draft, said bottom flue communicating with the exit-flue F. In order to increase the area at the water-line, there is an exterior drum G, preferably horizontally disposed at one side of the upper portion of the drum A, and said drum Gr is connected with drum A by the upper and The drum G may thus serve also as a steam-drum. The drum A is best extended some distance below the lower horizontal box B to serve as a sediment-dei pository from which the deposited material may be blown out at c. There are additional blow-offs b at the outer end of the lower box B. In operation a strong 11p-current is engendered in the vertical tubes C, which induces a down-current in the vertical drum A, thus giving a regular circulation. The feedwater being injected into the vertical column is at once thoroughly heated, and the salts and sediment are well precipitated out of it before it reaches the tubes.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure byLetters Patent, is-
1. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, and vertical water-tubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers.
2. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with the vertical drum or cylininder, near its upper end, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with the vertical drum or cylinder far enough above its lower end to form said extended lower end of the drum or cylinder into a sediment-deposit-Ory, and vertical water-tubes connecting the two horizontal boxes or chambers.
3. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, vertical Watertubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers, and an exterior drum connected with the upper portion of the vertical drum or cylinder and so disposed as to increase the area of the water-line.
4. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, vertical watertubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers, and a horizontal exterior drum, having an upper and lower connection with the upper portion of the vertical drum or IOD cylinder, and so disposed as to increase the .area of the water-line and serve also as a steam-drum.
5. A boiler consisting of a Vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said Vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, vertical watertubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers, and a setting comprising a firechamber in .which said Vertical water-tubes are exposed to the fire for a portion of their length, and a flue from the fire-chamber in which the remaining length of said tubes are exposed to the llames.
6. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, Vertical watertubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers, and a setting comprising a firechamber in which the upper portion of the tnbes are exposed to the fire, and a flue from said fire-chamber to carry the llames down wardly around the lower portion of the tubes.
7. A boiler consisting of a Vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, vertical watertubes connecting said horizontal boxes or chambers, and a setting comprising a firechamber in which the upper portion of the tubes are exposed to the fire, a downward zigzag flue, to carry the flames downward about the lower portion of the tubes, and a bottom flue communicating with the zigzag iiue and leading to an exit.
8. A boiler consisting of a vertical drum or cylinder, a horizontal box or chamber communicating with said vertical drum or cylinder, a second horizontal box or chamber communicating with said drum, vertical water- In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand.
