HAIR-RETAINING COMB.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 684,066, dated October 8, 1901. Application filed May 7, 1901. Serial No. 69,167. (No model.)

Be it known that I, MARTHA J. KING, a citi ten of the United States, residing at Duluth, in the county of St. Louis and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and use ful Improvements in Combs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in combs, and more particularly to that form of comb employed for preventing the hair from becoming disheveled.

It consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide means for confining the short hairs of the nape of the neck to prevent the same from falling about the shoulders and presenting a disheveled appearance.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view in side-elevation, illustrating the application of a comb embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 represents an enlarged perspective view of the invention, and Fig. 3 represents transverse sectional views of modified forms of the comb proper.

The present invention contemplates the employment of a comb proper, as 1, of any preferred form, but preferably curved to fit snugly the nape of the neck. Any desired curve may be employed, varying, of course, in accordance with the size of the comb. Secured to either end of the comb by suitable flexible means, as 2 2, preferably'chain, wire, or cord, are hair-pins, as 3 3, for securing the ends of said flexible means at any desired point to the hair. The said pins 3 may of course be of any suitableform, size, or shape and secured pivotally or otherwise, as at 4 4, t0 the outer ends of said flexible means 2. It will be seen also that the inner ends of said flexible means may be secured pivotally to the comb or in any other desired manner. The back of the comb 1 may be provided, as seen in Fig. 3, with any desired rib, roll, or convolution, extending longitudinally of said back at its bottom, as 5, 5, 5", or 5, and may be either plain, figured, or set with stones or otherwise artificially furnished or ornamented, as may be found preferable or desirable, and is provided with any suitable teeth 6 6.

In the application of my improved comb the same is adapted to be applied to the hair at the base of the head and the short hairs of the nape of the neck confined by the roll or convolution 5, while the pins 3 3 are passed through the hair at the most advantageous point for assisting in securely retaining the comb against possible movement or jar.

Although I have specifically described one particular embodiment of the present improvement, yet I do not Wish to be understood as confining myself to the exact form shown and specified, but shall feel at liberty to deviate from the size, shape, or minor details of construction of the device within the spirit and scope of my invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. A hair-comb, comprising in its construction a back, a row of teeth projecting therefrom, and a roll located longitudinally of the back and extending laterally inward therefrom for receiving and confining the short hairs and preventing a disheveled appearance of the same, the said comb being curved to conform to the nape of the neck, substantially as described.

2. A hair-comb, comprising in its construction a curved back having a row of teeth projecting therefrom, a roll extending longitudinally of the back projecting laterally therefrom and curved upwardly, and adapted to receive and confine the short hairs of the neck when said comb is applied to the base of the head, and means for retaining said comb in position when thus applied, substantially as described.
