. JOHN H. ZIROKEL, OF PITTSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO THOMAS ATOHISON, OF SAME PLACE.
BRICK-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,937, dated May 14, 1901.
T0 all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN H. ZIRCKEL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 2618 Smallmau street, Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brick-Carriers; aud I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an improved device for carrying brick; and it consists in the certain details of construction and combination of parts as will be fully described hereinafter. l
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation, partly in section, of my improved device for ,carrying brick, the same being constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
To construct a device for carrying brick in accordance with my invention, I provide a bar 2 of a suitable size and form at one end thereof a clevis 3, through which a hinge-bolt 4 is passed. Connected or hinged to this clevis 3 is a hand lever or bar 6, having that portion below the clevis 3 flattened to form a means 5 for taking a frictional grip upon the side or one end of arow of brick l, placed side by side. Arranged in connection with the bar 2 is a tube 7, capable of telescoping the said bar, and the two rigidly attached or adjusted the one with the other by means of a set-screw 8, passing through an enlarged portion 8 at one end of the said tube. rlhe other end of this tube 7 is provided with a grip 9, bent downward at a right angle with the said tube and similar to the grip 5, formed with the handlebar 6. Formed integral with the solid portion of the tube 7 is a handhold 10, which will enable the operator to steady the apparatus while carrying the load.
In operation a number of brick 1 are arranged side by side, as shown at Fig. l of the drawings, and the device adjusted by means ot the set-screw 8 to correspond to the number of brick it is desired to carry. The operator depresses the handle-bar 6, which will cause the grips 5 and 9 to separate and at the same time adjusts the same to the sides of the bricks. By an upward lift or movement of the handle-bars the grips are brought tightly against the two end bricks of the row, taking a frictional hold upon the same, the weight ofthe brick binding the one to the other. To release the brick, it is only necessary to place the same upon the iioor and depress the handle-bar 6. t
Various slight modifications and changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a device of the character described, the combination with the circular bar or rod 2 carrying a clevis 3 at its outer end, and a hand-lever pivoted in said clevis and provided with a flattened grip 5, of a tube 7 telescoping said bar or rod 2 and provided with an enlarged end 8, a set-screw engaging through said enlarged end of the tube and impinging on the rod or bar to lock the tube and the rod or bar together, the other end of said tube terminating in a flattened grip 9, andan integral handheld carried by the tube 7 adjacent to the grip 9, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto affixed my signature in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. p
