SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 673,790, dated May '7, 1901.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN WV. SUTTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a churn for producing butter, and has for its objectto provide improved parts thereof of utility combined with well-known parts in such manner as to produce a complete, simple, and inexpensive apparatus whereby butter may be produced in the shortest possible time and of superior quality. With this object in view the ma-' chine is durable and economical in use and also conveniently arranged for easy operation.
The invention consists in a novel form of duplex dasher, or, more specifically, in a pair of dasher groups working in opposite directions and as nearly as possible in the same plane, and in a new form of spindle-head whereby the dasher-spindles may be quickly removed and replaced in the head and in the churn vessel; and the invention consists also in the parts and combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter particularly described and claimed.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of my improved dasherspindles and dashers and also showing the spindle-head with its hinged part open; Fig. 2, a central vertical sectional view of a churn having my improved spindle-head, spindles, and dashers applied thereto; Fig. 3, a fragmentary view in elevation of exterior portions of a churn, showing parts for connecting the churn to the frame and also showing the gearwheel connections; Fig. 4, a central vertical sectional view of the hollow dasher-spindle and connected parts; Fig. 5, a top plan View of a churn having my invention applied thereto; Fig. 6, a fragmentary detail view showing the top of the spindle-head open; and Fig. 7,

In practically carrying out my invent-ion I provide a metallic upright frame A, having legs a. a and at the upper end thereof a horizontal arm B, arranged to extend over the top of the churn vessel to near the center thereof and having an elevated curved arm 0 supporting a spindle-head comprising a fixed portion D and a hinged movable portion E, together providing a journal-bearing for the dasher-spindle L. The arm B supports ahorizontal spindle I, suitably journaled therein.
The frame A has a bracket or plurality of brackets b at the lower portion of the inner side, upon which is secured a base F, designed to support the churn vessel H, which may be of the well-known type of circular tub and rest removably upon the base and may be provided with a halved lid 1'. The base has a leg d for supporting the side remote from the frame A. Upon the top of the base is secured a cleat e, of curved form, so as to fit against a segment of the vessel H, the opposite side of which may have contact against the frame A, so that it may be held centrally upon the base and with reference to the spindle-head.
The frame A has a solid portion f, supporting a stud on which a large toothed wheel G is rotatively mounted and which may be operated by a handle w or by means of suitablyconnected power mechanism. The horizontal spindle I is journaled in the arm B and at its outer end has secured thereto a small toothed wheel J, engaging the wheel G. A hood 3' preferably extends from the arm B over the wheel J. A miter gear-Wheel K is secured to the inner end of the spindle I. The vessel H has a bracket is attached thereto, at the outer side of the top thereof, to which is connected a screw-bolt Z, extending through a suitable aperture in the frame A.
The bottom h of the vessel H is provided with a central socket 'm, in which the lower end of the inner dasher-spindle L is rotatively mounted, the upper end of said spindle being rotatively mounted in the head D E in the bearings r r. A hub M, having a hole M, is fitted to the spindle L, near the lower end thereof, and is secured thereto, as by a setscrew t. The hub carries a suitable number of cylindrical dashers O, the ends 0 of which are secured in the hub.
A hollow spindle Q of suitable internal diameter is mounted rotatively on the spindle L and comprises a section of tube having a number of broad slits 'n in the wall thereof extending longitudinally nearly the full length thereof, the slits being provided so that the spindle L therein may be cleansed without removing it and so that the interior of the hollow spindle also may be easily.

At the lower end of the spindle Q a hub N is attached thereto, preferably by means of screw-threads, the hub extending over the end of the spindle, so as to provide an end bearing-face y, working in contact with and supported by the upper face of the hub'M, the hub N having a bore W, in which the spindle L may rotate. A retaining set-screw, as t, may be also employed for binding the hub N, which carries a suit able number of cylindrical dashers P secured thereto. The upper end of the hollow spindle Q is provided with a miter gear-wheel S, suitably secured thereto, as by screw-threads and a set-screw 6, said wheel extending over the end of the spindle and having a bore V, in which the spindle L may rotate, and meshing with the wheel K. Immediately below the head D E a miter gear-wheel R is secured to the spindle L, as by a set-screw t, and meshes also with the wheel K oppositely to the wheel S, so that as the driving-wheel K rotates the wheels R and S are driven in opposite directions, aswell as the spindles to which they are attached, and consequently the two groups of dashers.
The portion D of the head has ears g, between which is an opening U, and the portion E is connected at one side thereof to the opposite side of the portion D by means of a hinge-pin u. The free side of the portion E has a bolt T, having a screw-nut 19 connected thereto by means of a pivot-pin o, and when the head is complete the bolt T enters the opening U and the nu'tp is seated against the ears (1. v
I It will be understood that in constructing the various parts such material may be employed as may be best suited for the purpose.
In operation the rotation of the wheel G will cause a rotation of the wheel J, the spindle I, and the-wheel K, which in'turn will rotate the wheels R and S in opposite directions, as before stated, and as the dashers are of cylindrical form and move closely together in opposite directions a rapid agitation of the milk or cream is produced without injurious eifect, as the dashers produce a rolling eflr'ect rather than that of cutting upon the fat globules.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a churn, the combination with the hollow spindle, of the dasher-hub secured at one end of the spindle and having the portion projecting over the end of the spindle and having the bore therein, the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub, the gear-wheel secured to the opposite end of said spindle and having the portion extending over the end of said spindle and having the bore therein, with the inner spindle working in said bores and having the hub at the bottom thereof provided with the cylindrical dasher, substantially as shown and described,
2. In a churn, the combination of the hollow spindle having the screw-threads at the lower end thereof, the hub having screwthreads engaging the threads on said spindle and secured thereby, the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub, with the inner spindle and the hub thereon having the cylindrical dasher attached thereto, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a churn, the combination of the inner spindle, the hub secured to said spindle, the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub, the hub having the bore therein working over said inner spindle and upon said hub secured thereto, the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub having the bore therein, the outer spindle attached to said hub having the bore therein, the gear-wheel secured to the opposite end of said outer spindle and having the bore therein working over said inner spindle, the gear-wheel at the upper portion of said inner spindle, and the geanwhe'el engaging both of said gear-wheels, substantially as shown and described.
4:. In a churn, the combination of the inner spindle, the dasher-hub attached to said spindle, the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub, the slitted outer spindle, the dasher-hub attached to said outer spindle and having the bored portion extending over the endof said outer spindle and engaging said inner spindle, the cylindrical dasher attached to said last-described hub, the gear-wheel at the upper end of said outer spindle, the gear-wheel at the upper portion ofsaid inner spindle, the horizontal arm, the horizontal spindle, the gear-wheel on said horizontal spindle engaging said gear-wheels on said inner and outer spindles, the spindle-head on said horizontal arm engaging said inner spindle, and the gear-wheel at the outer end of said horizontal spindle, substantially as shown'and described.
5. In a churn, the combination of the churn vessel, the dasher-spindle, the horizontal arm, the curved arm, the stationary spindle-head portion attached to' said curved arm, the ears at one side of said portion, the movable portion hinged to said head portion, the-clamping-bolt engaging said movable portion and said ears, said dasher-spindle being engaged by said head portions; the dasher-hub, and the cylindrical dasher attached to said hub, substantially as shown and described.
6. In a churn, the combination of the base, the churn vessel, the frame, the horizontal arm on said frame over said vessel, the horizontal spindle mounted in said horizontal arm, the vertical gear-wheel attached to theinner end of said horizontal spindle, the curved arm attached to said horizontal arm and extending above and over said gear wheel, the hinged spindle-head attached to said curved arm, the inner dasher-spindle engaging said head and said vessel, the lower dasher-hub attached to said innerspindle, the cylindrical
