Description

@with tsts ste1tt--ffitm EDWIN M. SCT'T, OF AUBURN, NEW YORK.
I Letters Patent No.67,355, dated Jah/30,1867. l
IMI'ROVEMBNT IN MAGHINE FOB. GRINDING REBER-KNIVES.
@tige Sflgfhulc refemh tu in tlgnse rtters zitmt nth mahiugpnrt nf tige same.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, E. M. ScOTT, of Auburn, in the State of New York, have invented certain nen and useful Iinprqvements in Machines for Grinding Reaper-Knives; and, I do hereby declare that the following is s clear, full, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, `and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which Figure 1 represents a. side elevation.-
Figure 2, a plan view of the swinging frame with clamps attached.
Figure 3, a view of the various parts which slide upon the-table or bench.
Figure 4, a view of the toothed lever, by which the frame is held, and
Figure 5, a view of one ieg of the bench and one .end of the frame, showing the manner of hiiiging one to the other.
This invention has for its object the grinding of reaper-knives and giving them a uniform bevel, substantially in the manner hereinafter described; and to enable others skilled in the art to'make and use it, I will now describe its construction and operation. i i
A. represents'a table or bench, to the legs of which is hinged the frame H, as fuliiy 'shown in lig. 5. Said frame is provided with clamps I I I, for the purpose of holdingthe reaper-bar while the knives are being ground.
This frame is 'also provided with holes g g g, in which the toothed lever k is placed to press the knives against the stone. B and B are slides, one on top and theotherpbenealth the horizontal 4bars of table A, as seen in fig. 1. The top slide B has a semicireular slot cut through-it, as shown in iig. 6, the object of which will be crepresents a circular plate or disk, and is provided with the'collar F; said collar should .have two recesses cut in it, one side of each division being sloped, as partlyY seen in iig. 3. G represents a lever, and E a loose bolt, passing through said lever, disk C, collar F, and slides B B'. This belt is secured at its lower end by means of a nut. It lwill thus be observed that by turning the lever G it will rise to the top of collar F, thereby drawing the slides B B' against the top bars of the bench A, and by this means securely retaining all of the sliding apparatus at any desired point. a represents a bolt which passes through .the circular plate c, and also through the scmicircular slot in slide B. Said holt is provided with a thumb-screw, By the arrangement just described thc grindstone can be set and fixed at any desired he circular-plate c, (see fig. 1.) At the top of these uprights are the neces- On one'end of this shaft is secured the grindstone M, and at fully seen hereafter.'
as seen in figs. 1 and 3. angle. z h are uprights, secured to t saryjournals, through which passes the shaft x. the other crank N.
In operating my machine I first secure the reaper-bar on frame H by means of clampsI I. I then slide the stone to the desired point, and turn leverG to secure it. I then place the stone at an angle corresponding to the bevel I Wish the knives to be ground. The toothed lever c is now inserted in the holes just in front of the stone, by means of which the knives are held against the stone until sufficiently ground, when the slides may be'loosened and again adjusted. Thus the operation continues until the whole work is performed.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is Y 1. In combination with disk C I claim slides B B and thumb-screw d, as an'd for the purpose set forth.
2. I claim disk 0, slides B B', loose-bolt E, lever G, all combined substantially as and for the purpose specified. v
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I herewith afx my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWIN M. SCOTT.
