UNITED STATES FREDERICK W. HUNICK, OF WESTBEND, IOWA.
WELL-CASING.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 672,556, dated April 23, 1901.
Application filed June 25, 1900. Serial No. 21,538. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FREDERICK W. HUNIGK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Westbend, in the county of Humboldt and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful Well-Casing, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to well-casings in general, and more particularly to that class wherein the casing is formed in sections, the object of the invention being to provide a construction including a number of draintiles or similar short pipe-sections connected by simple and efficient couplings and having a lower end piece, which is tied to the uppermost pipe-section in a manner to hold the several sections securely in place.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will be evident from the following description.

Referring now to the drawings, there is shown a casing comprisinga plurality of pipesections 5. In the present instance only two sections are shown, although it will be readily understood that any number of sections may be used, depending upon the depth of the well. The lower pipe-section has its lower end disposed in an end piece 6, which is cylindrical at its outerface, While its inner face is tapered upwardly from its lower edge to a point below its upper edge, at which latter `point the end piece is reduced in internal diameter and is formed cylindrical to its upper end. The result of this taper and subsequent increase in internal diameter is the formation of a shoulder 7, against which is seated the lower end of the lowermost pipesection 5, which latter nts snugly the upper cylindrical end of the end piece 6.
Upon the upper end of the lowermost pipesection 5 is disposed a coupling 8, which is in the form of a metallic sleeve,which is crimped 5 inwardly midway between its ends to form. an inwardly-directed annular flange 9, against which rest the upper and lower ends of lthe pipe-sections 5, which are coupled thereby.
Any suitable number of pipe-sections are thus 5 v connected by means of the coupling-sleeves 8, and in order to hold them against longitudinal displacement from the sleeves tie-wires lO are employed. The tie-wires 10 are engaged at their lower ends with perforated lugs l1, 6
formed upon the outer surface of the end piece 6, the upper ends of the wires beings` connected to double hooks 12, which are engaged over the upper edge of the uppermost pipe-section 5, as shown. The tire-wires may be engaged with the hooks and secured by wrapping, as shown, the Wires being `first drawn taut to hold the sections and couplings rigidly in position.
It will of course be'understood that in prac- 7 tice various modifications of the specific construction shown may be made and that any suitable materials and proportions may be used for the various parts without departing from the spirit of the invention. 7
In a device of the class described, the combination with the pi pe-section 5,and the coupling 8 receiving the adjacent ends of the pipesections and provided at its center with an 8 inwardly bent or crlrnped portion sopor-ating the pipe-sections, of the end piece 6 provid ed at its upper end with a seat receiving the ad"""' jacent pipe-section, said end piece being provided with exterior ears and having its bore 8 tapered upwardly from its lower end to the said seat, and the wires 10 secured at their lower ends to the said eyes and provided at their upper ends with hooks engaging the upper end of the uppermost stantially as described.
