WERK FHOTO-LI'DIOGHAPMER. WASHINGTON. Dv CV @einen graftsjgatwt @fitter JOHN F, LITTLE, or LOGKPORT, NEW YORK. 'Letters Patent No. 67,052, dated July 23, 1867.
-BARRBL-ORBSSET.
TO ALL WIIOM IT MAY CON CERN Be itknownthat I, JOHN F. LITTLE, of Lockport, in the county of Niagara, and State ofNew York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Barrel-Crcssets; and I do hereby declare that the following is al`ull and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making -part ot' this specification, and representing a central vertical section of my improved device.
The object of my invention is to provide an apparatus to facilitate the heating process that is necessary in the manufacture of barrels, casks, Ste., and it consists essentially of a base-plate, ofa removable fire-chamber or cylinder, and also a removable ire-grate, all constructed and arranged as will presently be explained.
As represented in the drawing, A indicates the base-plate of my improved cresset, which is made of an annular form, and of the proper size to conform to that of the barrels which -areito be placed thereon. The base-plate is elevated a short distance above the door or surface on which 'it rests, and is supported by means of legs b b, secured to the base in any desired manner. On top of the base A is formed a vertically projecting rim, c, extending around near the outer edge of the same, but leaving an extension, d, of the plate Outside of the rim, on which the barrel to he heated rests, as represented in red lines. Inside of the outer projecting rim c is also. formed a smaller vertical rim or flange, e, which serves as a. bearing for the're-chamber or cylinder B, and over which its end closely fits. Through the base-plate A, within the compass of the flange e, is formed aeentral opening or draught-passage, g, and across this passage, resting on the shoulderlt of the base,'is situated a removable grate; Z. v
When in use the device is preferably situated under a fire-place or chimney, through which the smoke is allowed to pass oit, the same as in the ordinary device.
There are several important advantages comprised in this device, which I am not aware were ever before. obtained in so cheap and simple a manner. By elevating the baseA a little above the surface, a draughtbf air has a free passage upward through the opening gend {ire-chamber, without admitting cold air-inside the barrel, the space between it andthe tire being-closed by the annular plate A, and the heated air is more perfectly confined than is the case in the ordinary device, where only a fire-cylinder is employed, in which case the barrel must be raised slightly. in order to admit a draught of air through the fire, when the cold air is admitted inside the barrel and greatly retards the process of heating thesame. The rim c not only serves tO keep the barrolin position on the base A, but also protects'the barrel from becoming burned by coals oi' re falling from the hase.' The gratel is made removable, so as to allowthe lire-chamber to be easily cleared from obstructions, and allow the grate to be replaced by-a new onelwhen it becomes useless by wear. The fire-cylinder B is preferably formed I with numerous perforations Oropenings in its sides, by means of which a greater degree of' radiation is allowed` and the heated air and ,products of combustion. can more readily pass outward into the space between the fire.- chamher and sides of the barre-l, and thereby greatly facilitates the heating and seasoning process required to 'equalize the wear of the same, and also to allow the cylinder itself to be replaced by a new one when it becomesV worn out. By this arrangement it will be, perceived that the-base itself will serre fer a great le'ng'tlrof time, whilethe gratel and fire-cylinder B canbc readily'removed, when they become worn oi' useless, and replaced by new ones.
In the manufacture of this device I prefer making the base Aof cast metal, which may bemade in a single piece, an'd substantially of the form represented in the drawing. The fire-cylinder I3 may he made either of cast or sheet metal, according to thei'uel to be used. Where only wood is to be burned it `may be made simply of sheet iron, but in the use of coal I prefervthe employment'of cylinders made of cast iron.
What I claimfas my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The annular base A, in combination with the perforated tire-cylinder B and' grate l, constructed, arranged, and operating substantially as and for the purpose setforth.
In witness whereuls I have hereunto signed my naine in the presencel of two subscribing witnesses.
