UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE..
PATRICK J. HIGGINS, OF NEW VIENNA, OHIO.
DEvlCE FIOR DECAPITATING POULTRY.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent No. 670,47 9, dated March 26, 1901.
I Application filed June 4, 1900. Serial No. 19,049. (No model.)
To all whom it may oon/067%.-
Be it known that I, PATRICK J. HIGGINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Vienna, in the county of Clinton and State of Ohio, haveinvented new and useful Improvements in Devices for Decapitating Poultry, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a new and improved device for decapitating poultry; and its primary object is to provide adevice which is simple and durable in construction, cheap to manufacture, and'eftcient in use.
A further object is to provide means whereby the head of the fowl may be held firmly in position while the knife is being used.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts herein after more fully described and claimed, andillustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a top plan view; and Fig. 3 is a section on line a; Fig. 2.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a base upon which are secured two similar standards 2, preferably formed of sheet metal and recessed in their upper edges at the center, as shown at 3. A knifeblade 4 is pivoted between these standards at 5 and extends across the recess 3, terminating in a handle 6. The standards are preferably secured at the proper distance from each other by means of rivets or bolts 7, as shown. Secured to the base at a point below and adjacent to the recess 3 is a wire 8, preferably wedge-shaped in elevation, and extends at an incline from the base and preferably secured thereto in any suitable manner, as by means of a nail or bolt 9. This device is preferably formed in one piece, and
I donot restrict myself to the use of wire, as, if desired, the same may be formed of any other desired material.
The knife-blade 4 may be of any desired form and materialand may be formed integral with or separate from the handle 6.
When it is desired to decapitate a fowl, the knife is raised and the head placed between the arms of the wire 8, which will firmly hold the samein position. The neck is then placed within the recess 3 and the knife swung downward upon its pivot 5.
It will be seen that by employing this device the head will be firmly held in position and quickly severed.
In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of my invention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing. from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make suoh'changes as fairly fall within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a base having eutting mechanism thereon comprising recessed i u'prights and a cutting-knife pivoted therebetween, of a wedge-shaped holder secured to the base andinclined away from the uprights, said holder being formed in one piece, a loop in the center thereof, and means within said loop for securing the holder to the base.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
PATRICK J. HIGGINS.
