TO ALL WHM I'I' MAY CONCERN: y
Be it knownthat I, JOAB H. WOOSTER, of Stryltersville, Wyoming county, and State of New York, (assigner to myself and Robert Dunbar, of Buffalo, New lYorli,) lia-ve invented a certain new .and improved Governor for Steam'Engines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full .and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in wl1ich- Figure I is a side elevation. i
Figure II is a top plain view.
Figure III is a. detail .sectional view.-
The nature of this invention consists, first, in the arrangement of the governor-balls upon arms or rods radiating from the driving-shaft of ay steam engine, and the connection of thearms'of such balls with the eccentric, which operates the cut-oi'. valve in manner herein set forth, so that the outward movement of the balls will he communicated to the eccentric'and thereby control the cut-o'; second, in the eccentric being loosely arranged en the driving-shaft, in connection with the governor, the governor holding the eccentric and changingand controlling its lead. i i
Letters of. like name and kind refer to like parts in each of the figures.
The governor-balls A are placed upon the radial arms B B in a manner to allow them to move outwardly and inwardly upon saidarrns.. vThe said arms are attached to and radiate from the.driving-shafty at any convenient location. They may be attached by means of a hub, or otherwise, or they may be attached between'the spokes of the ily-wheel, as shown in the drawings, the place of attachment being a matter of choice or convenience. A spiral spring, G, is connected with each governor-hall and coiled around the radial arm, and also attached at its opposite end to the lug el, secured between two adjusting screw-nuts c2 near the hub. D represents the eccentric, which is placed loosely upon the shaft, and is connected with the cut-ofi' valveE by means of theconnecting-rod E. The eccentric has a i1u b,d, projecting from the .side nextto the governor-balls. F is theieccentric ofthe slide-valve F2, whicheccentric is'inadc fast on the shaft, and Fl is its connecting-rod. G represents a `collar, having crank-like extensions h, which is connected to the hub d of the loose eccentric b'ymeansoi' the set-screws g. The-crank extensions of the collar are each `connected to thegovernor-ball by means of the rods h'.
rlhe adjustable springs are made to oppose a given force't'o the outward movement of the governor-balls.
The eccentric, which is in connection' with the cut-ofi` valve, being placed and used loosely upon the shaft, and being connected with the governor, and being held and controlled by 'the governor, as before described, itis evident that the governor will act directly upon the eccentric to change and determine its lead, and thereby control the cut-oli.
All the parts may be set so as to give any required velocity to thc `driving-shaft, and so as to cutoff steam atlany required part'of the stroke. Y
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The arrangement of the governor-balls A, sliding` on rods B B, radiating from the driving-shaft of a steam engine, and held by coiled springs C, their arms h connecting with the-eccentric, which operates the cut-oli` valve in such manner that the outward movement of the balls will be communicated to the eccentric and thereby control the cut-oli', substantially as described. Y
2. The connection of the rod z to the eccentrics, consisting of the hub d', collar G, with crank-like extensions L, connected to the hub d by the set-screw g', constructed and arranged as set f'orth.4
