THOMAS HILL, OF JERSEY CITY, NEV JERSEY.
DUMPlNe-wAeoN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,470, dated July 16, 1901. Application nea December' 6,1900. Santino. 38,854. (Nomaden T0 all whom/ it 11m/,y concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS HILL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and Stateof New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Vagons, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to improvements in dumping-wagons, and pertains more particularly to the novel pedestal construction hereinafter described and claimed, adapted to receive the trunnions which project from the sides of the vehicle-body.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly broken away, of a cart equipped with a pedestal construction embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of the pedestal construction and its supporting-frame. Fig. 3 is a horizontal longitudinal section of same on the dotted line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a detached top view of the longitudinal bar which bears upon the springs and receives the trunnion. Fig. 5 is a bottom View of same, and Fig. 6 is a bottom view of one of the pedestal-caps.
In the drawings, 10 designates the usual wheels, 11 the side frames, which extend frontward to formV the booms 12, and'13 the cart or vehicle body, also of usual construction, having the trunnions 14 projected laterally from its sides and constituting the `pivotal points on which the said body may turn rearward when it is desired to dump the same. Upon the side frames are bolted the pedestal structures made the subject of. this application and each comprising the base-plate 15, the hollow pedestals -16 16, the springs 17'- within said pedestals, the longitudinal bar 18, having the bearing 19 for the trunnion 14, and at its ends resting on said springs 17, the caps 20 on the upper ends of said pedestals 16, and the rods 21, which extend centrally through said pedestalsl6, springs 17, ends of bar 18, and caps 20.
The base-plate l5 is of suitable size and is in one integral casting with the hollow pedestals 16 16, the latter when in the casting being open both at their upper and lower ends.
The plate 15 is secured upon the side frames 11 by means of bolts 22 and the aforesaid rods 21, and said plate being integral with the hollow pedestals 16 16 supports the same. l The pedestals 16 16 are cylindrical in cross-section and have at their facing sides the vertical slots 23, which are encompassed at their sides and bottom by the flanges 24, which afford broad wall-surfaces to said slots 23 and also strengthen the pedestals.
Within the pedestals 16 16 are conlined the coiled springs 17, whose lower ends bear upon the side frames 11 or upon small protecting- The ends of the bar 18 are circular and sub-.
stantially correspond at their edges with the inner walls of the pedestals 16, and said ends of the bar 18 are wider than the slot-s 23, and hence could not be pulled horizontally outward through said slots, in which, as is apparent, the bar 18 is adapted to have a vertical movement.
Upon the upper ends of the pedestal 16 are the caps 20, which have a polygonal central aperture 28 and two concentric edge iianges 29 29 to pass upon and hold between them the upper edges of the pedestals 16, said fianges 29 29 affording strength to the caps 2O and effectually resisting any tendency of said caps to move laterally when the cart is in use. the pedestals 16 and also the upper ends of the slots 23, and they retain the ends of the bar 18 securely within the pedestals 16 16 without interfering with the vertical movement of said bar. A The caps 20 are fastened upon the upper ends of the pedestals 16 by means of the bolt- `rods 21, which pass downward through the caps 20, the ends of the bar 18, the springs 17 and the side frames 11, said bolt-rods 21 hav- The caps 20 close the upper ends of IOO ing a head to bear upon the upper end of the caps 2O and being threaded at their .lower ends to receive the securing-nuts below the lower surface of the side frames 11. The upper portions of the bolt-rods 2l are provided with the polygonal surfaces 30 to engage the walls of the apertures 28 in the caps 20, the said polygonal surfaces 30 in connection with the walls of the apertures 28 constituting means for preventing the turning of the boltrods 2l. It will be observed upon reference to Fig. 2 that the bolt-rods 21 pass downward centrally through the hubs 26 on the lower sides of the ends of the bar 18, and hence the' said rods 21 aid in guiding the bar 18 during its vertical movement, the walls of the apertures through the hubs 26 forming extended guiding-surfaces to move on the rods 21.
The trunnions 14 at the opposite sides of the body 13 are retained within the bearingapertures 19 of the bars 18, and hence the said trunnions have a spring bearing by reason of the support afforded to the bar 18 by means of the springs 17, and during the movement of the vehicle the bar 18 will have a vertical play, being guided in its movement by the walls of the slots 23, the surfaces of the bolt-rods 21, and the inner walls of the pedestals 16, the said bar 18, while being permitted to have a vertical movement, being eifectually prevented from having endwise movement.
The construction hereinbefore presented is of that durable character which enables it to withstand the severe usage to which the carts are ordinarily subjected, and in addition the structure is such that it embraces the minimum number of parts and is capable of being constructed and applied in a comparatively inexpensive manner. It is to be observed also that the details of the parts of the pedestal structure are so disposed and arranged with relation to one another as to prevent endwise thrusts against the bar 18 from having any prejudicial effect on the structure as a whole, the strains following any endwise thrusts on the bars 18 being so distributed through the structure as a whole as to enable the structure to withstand the same.
Vhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
