BARREL-CARRIER.

Be it known that we, JOHN METOALFE and THOMAS BELL, citizens of the United States, residing at Roscoe, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Barrel'O-arriers, of which the followingis a specification.
Our invention relates to barrel-carriers, the object thereof being to provide a new and improved means by which a barrel or barrels may be carried, more specifically a device which may be readily attached to a barrel of the type known as beer-barrels by oppositely-arranged bearing-arms being inserted in the chime, said bearing-arms being slidably mounted upon abase-plate, means for retracting and expanding said arms, and means whereby one or a plurality of barrels may be carried.
With this and other minor objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularlypointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my invention, showing the same as applied in practice for carrying a pair of barrels. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of a carrier detached and on an enlarged scale. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal View of the same. base-plate. Fig. 5 is asimilar View of one of the clamping-arms. Figs. 6 and 7 are plan views of the pawl-and-ratchet disks. Fig. 8 is a detail perspective view of the pivot-bolt and connecting parts disconnected and arranged'in their proper relative positions. In carrying our invention into effect we employ the following features: the base-plate 1, having elongated slots 2, and the oppositelyarranged bearing-arms 3, slidably and longitudinally secured to the base-plate 1 by means of the headed bolts 4 and 4?, working in the slots 2. Passing through the center of the base-plate 1 is the shaft 6, provided with the enlarged annular head 7 and terminating in a perforated ear 8, to which the link-bar 9 is secured, and fastened to the top of the linkbar 9 is an eye 10, provided with the bifur- Fig. 4 is a plan view of the cated arms 10*, having alining perforations through which a pin or bolt passes in order that the eye 10 may be held in engagement with the aforementioned link-bar 9.
It will be understood that the above construction will be employed when it is desired to carry a plurality of barrels; but should it be found desirable to carry only one barrel a suitable handle-such, for instance, as illus trated in Fig. 9will be utilized.
The bearing-arms 3 are adapted to be op erated to move inwardly and outwardly in re-' verse direction upon the base-plate 1 through the medium of an adjusting-disk 11, mounted to oscillate upon the enlarged annularhead 7 of the shaft 6 and provided upon opposite sides of its center with cam-slots 12, through which the bolts 4? project. These slots are so arranged as to exert a cam action upon the bolts 4 and to thus impart an inward and outward motion to the bearing-arms 3. As shown, the inner ends of the slots 12 are dis posed closest to the pivot-bolt 6 and upon diametrically opposite sides of the said bolt, thence projecting outwardly toward the periphery of the said disk and progress only away from the said bolt. By this construction it will be seen that when the disk 11 is oscillated in one direction the bolts 4 will be drawn inwardly as they approach the inner ends ofthe slots 12, and that, on the other hand, a reverse movement of the said disk will cause the bolts et to approach the outer ends of the slots 12, and thereby be forced apart, this action resulting in the bearing-arms 3 being moved inwardly and outwardly in an obvious manner. To enable the disk 11 to be oscillated, it is provided with the handle 13.
A fixed disk 14 is arranged between the disk 11 and the bearing-arms 3 and is provided with a weighted pawl 15 to engage an annular series of ratchet-teeth 16 upon the disk 11. This pawl is held pivotally in a slot 17 and has a lower projecting portion 18, by which it may be disengaged from the ratchet-teeth when desired. When the disk 11 is oscillated to project the arms 3, the ratchet-teeth slip over the pawl 17. The engagement of said pawl with one of the ratchetteeth prevents a reverse movement of the disk. By this means the bearing-arms 3 may be projected to the desired extent and will be locked against inward movement by the said pawl, which may be disengaged through the medium of its projecting portion 18 to permit of the arm being retracted.
In practice the device is adapted to be employed by resting it upon the uppermost head of the barrel to be carried and by oscillating the disk 11 to project the bearing-arms 3 and cause the outer ends thereof to catch into or engage the chime of the barrel, the pawl-andratchet connections between holding the said arms in engagement. By retracting the pawl the disk 11 may be oscillated in the opposite direction to withdraw the bearing-arms 3 from engagement with the barrel, whereupon the device may be removed for further use.
\Vhen it is desired to connect a plurality of barrels for carrying, the eye 10 is utilized, and upon the application of the carrier or clamping device to each barrel the several barrels may be connected by passing a bar 5 through each of the eyes 10, whereupon the barrels may be easily carried. In carrying a single barrel the eye 10 is dispensed with and a suitable handlesuch, for instance, as illustrated in Fig. 9is used.
The construction and. mode of operation of our invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description, and it will be seen that the invention provides a simple and effective device for the purpose stated. The preferred form of this invention is herein shown; but it will of course be understood that modification may be made within the scope of our invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A barrel-carrier comprising a base-plate formed with elongated slots; arms slidably supported on said base-plate; bolts connecting the arms and base-plate; a shaft extending through the base-plate; an oscillating disk mounted on said shaft and formed with cam-slots through which the bolts project; and means for locking said disk at different positions.
2. A barrel-carrier comprising a base-plate formed with elongated slots, arms slidably supported on said base-plate, bolts connecting the arms and base-plate, a shaft extending through the base-plate, an oscillating disk mounted on said shaft and formed with cam-slots through which the bolts project, and means for locking said disk at difierent positions, comprising ratchet-teeth on the under surface of the oscillating disk, and a pawl arranged below said disk.
3. A barrel-carrier comprising a base-pla te formed with elongated slots; arms slidably supported in said base-plate; bolts for connecting the arms and base-plate; a shaft extending centrally through the base-plate and formed with an annular head and a projecting ear; a link secured to said car; an oscillating disk mounted on said annular head and formed with cam-slots and ratchet-teeth, and a fixed disk arranged below the oscillating disk; and a pawl secured to said fixed disk to engage the ratchet-teeth.
