UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
EDMUND J. WATKINS, OF OAMBRIA, MICHIGAN.
VEHICLE-WHEEL.
SPECIFICATION forming part Of Letters Patent No. 678,149, dated July 9, 1901. Application filed December 14, 1899. Renewed December 20, 1900. Serial No. 40,586. (-No model.)
' To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, EDMUND J. WATKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cambria, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and'useful Improvements in Vehicle-Wheels; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which I it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to vehicle-wheels.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple, durable, and inexpensive wheel with increased traction service, thereby enabling it to roll over soft ground without sinking or burying itself.
To this end the invention consistsin certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved wheel. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 3 is a view of one layer of the wheel. Fig. 4 is a similar View showing one layer placed upon the other to break joint, a portion of the top layer of the wheel being broken away to show the under layer. Fig. 5 is a view of one of the hubseotions. Fig. 6 is a similar view of the other hub-section.
In the drawings the same reference characters indicate the same parts of the invention.
1 denotes the layers of my improved wheel, each of which is formed of semicircular sec- 3 5 tions 2, out lengthwise of the grain of the wood and the edges of which are brought together. These sections are arranged side by side to break joint and to expose the end grain of the wood to the road-bed. Bolts 3 are used for securing the layers together.
4 and 5 denote the inner and outer hub-sections, respectively. Each section consists of two disks centrally divided in a manner similar to the layers 1 and arranged to break joint.
6 denotes the sand band, which extends through the alined apertures of the hub-sections and the layers constituting the body of the wheel.
7 denotes the tires, shrunk upon the outer layers forming the Wheel.
' From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, operation, and advantages of my improved wheel, it is thought, will be readily appreciated without requiring an ex- 5 5 tended explanation, As many layers may be employed as are necessary to make a wheel of the thickness desired.
Havingthus described the invention, what is claimed, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A wheel composed of a series of layers, each layer composed of two parts arranged to break joint with its adjacent layer, the grain of the alternate layers throughout the entire num- EDMUND J. WATKINS.
