UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ROBERT JOHNSMITH, OF OTTAWA, CANADA.
OVERALLS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 678,049, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed $eptember 29, 1900 Serial No. 31,574. (No model.)
Be it known that I, ROBERT JOHN SMITH, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing at Ottawa, in the county of Carleton, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Overalls,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in overalls; and the object of the invention is to so construct the overalls as to allow the contraction and expansion of the waist portion, and thus adapt it to different persons having greater or less waist circumference, and also to obviate the necessity of buttoning or unbuttoning the garment as it is donned or taken off by the wearer; and it consists, essentially, of overalls made of a continuous and undivided piece in the front of the waist portion, a divided back portion of the waist, shoulderbands set crisscross at the back of the wearer and connected to the waist portion at the inner ends of the said divided portions, and an adjustable connection securing the bands to the front of the waist portion, as hereinafter more particularly explained.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the garment as worn. Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the upper portion of the garment, showing the slit divided. Fig. 3 is a similar View in the position when worn.
In the drawings like letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.
A represents the overalls, formed of the waist and leg portion A and the bib B.
Ct is a semiwaistband, divided in the center by a vertical slit (1' and from the bib portion by vertical seams a to enable the garment to fit the figure of the wearer.
O and O are shoulder-straps, which cross each other obliquely at the back of the wearer and are suitably secured to the divided ends a and a of the waistband. The opposite ends are passed over the shoulder of the wearer and are adjustably secured at c c' of the bib,
der-strap O is passed therethrough, and the end of the waistband a which overlaps the wearer by being made with a front flap to fasten each side by buttons. This is always very liable to catch and tear open. By my construction a continuous surface is given to the front and side of the garment. lhe gar ments also previously constructed were not adapted to the body of the wearer, being either too tight or too loose. In my garment itwill be readily seen that by adjusting the fastenings a and c of the shoulder-bands the overlapping ends a and d are drawn more or less into an overlapping position, thus regulating the circumference of the Waist portion to that of the wearer. If desired, the seams a may be left open, or partially so, to enable the-wearer to have access to the pockets be neath.
My overalls are easily donned and without any buttoning, and when it is desirable that they be removed they may be easily slipped off the body of the wearer.
In case the garment is used by a person of more than ordinary waist circumference an expansive piece of material may be inserted, as shown in Fig. 2, so as to keep the clothes of the wearer from exposure. i
What I claim as my invention is-- e As a new article of manufacture, a pair of overalls comprising a waist portion having a slit therein, one edge of the slit being adapted to overlie the other in combination with shoulder-straps, one member thereof being secured to one edge of the slit and having a looped portion forming a guide for the'other member which is secured to the opposite edge of the slit whereby the secured member is held in a position overlying said first-mentioned edge of the slit to retain the same in place, substantially as described.
ROBERT JOHN SMITH.
