PATENT Ormea.
PALMER M. CADY, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO CHARLES J. KAIGHIN, OF SAME PLACE.
NEcKTtE-HoLDER.
SEEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N o. 677,951, dated July 9, 1901.
Application filed March 11, 190].. Serial No. 50.581. (No model.)
To all whom t may cm1/cern.-
Be it knownthat I, PALMER M. CADY, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and` county of San Francisco, State of California, have invented an Improvement in Necktie-Holders; and I herebyv declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention relates to an improved collarbutton clasp to be secured to a necktie and by which the latter is held in position upon the wearer.
It consists, essentially, -of two connected members, each consisting of a plate having a portion bent outwardly and backwardly and then outwardly and forwardly again, the ends provided with segmental notches adapted to grasp the shank of the collar-button and to inclose the head within the jaws so formed by said bent portions.
It also comprises details more fully to be set forth hereinafter.
Figure 1 shows the holder attached to a bow-tie. Fig. 2 is a top view of the holder using a spring. Fig. 3 shows a plate before transformed into a holder member. Fig. 4 shows it connected with a string-tie.
A represents a plate of metal'or other suitable material stamped preparatory to being bent into the shape of one of the holder members. Notches, as 2, are formed in thisplate, and one end is provided With a segmental notch 3, sufficient to fit about the shank of a collarbutton. To form one of these members, the
v notched end portion of the plate, on the line mental notches 3 to grasp the shank of andl inclose the head of a collar-button.
The application of the holder is shown as follows: B represents a tie of the ordinary bow variety, having bands b, by which it is secured about the neck. The form of device shown and described is for use with ties of this character, and the lever portions 5 and 5 of the holder being secured to these bands the simple operation ot' fastening the tie about the'neck causes a contraction of the jaws and a secure grasp of the button by them.
Where the holder is to be used with ties without such neckband, it is necessary to provide other means by which the jaws may be made to retain their grasp of the button.
This I accomplish by means of a spring S,
which may be secured to the under side of one of the levers 5 and adapted to press against the other lever, as shown, and in such manner as always to tend to hold the jaws closed.
Sometimes it is not possible or desired to secure the holder permanently to the tie, as in the case of string-ties, dac. Then I use the form of device shown in Fig. 4, said device being separatefrom 'the tie. In this form the device is adjusted first on the collar-button, and the lever portions 5 5 are provided with bands or straps 9 of metal or other suitable material, and the ends of the tie are passed through these bands or straps and may be tied in any desired manner. `The -holder may also be ornamented as desired.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A necktie fastener or holder, consisting of two hinged members, each member having a straight port-ion adapted to be secured to the tie, adjacent portions of these members bent outwardly and backwardly and again outwardly and forwardly to form jaws, the ends of these jaws having oppositely-disposed slots, and means whereby the jaws may be actuated.
2. A necktie-holder consisting of two lmembers, each member having a slot in one end, slots in the sides of said members, the por tions of the members having the terminal slots, bent on the line of the lateral slots and at right angles to the plane of the straight portion to form jaws, and means by which the members are hinged together.
3. A necktie holder, consisting of two hinged members, each of said members com-y prising a straight or lever portion, a portion loo bent at right angles to the plane of said portion, and adapted to form a jaw, a spring straight portion to form a jaw provided with whereby these jaws are held in a normally a notch, notches in the meeting edges of these closed condition, and transverse straps upon jaws, a spring secured to the under side of the outer side of said lever portions. 15
5 011e of said straight portions and adapted to In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my bear against the other member whereby the hand. jaws are normally kept closed. 1 v
4. A necktie holder, consisting of two Y PALMER CADY hinged members each having a lever portion, Witnesses: 1o and each having a second portion bent baek- S. H. NoURs-E,
