Be it known that I, HENRY F. RooNnY','of Randolph, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Penholders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide a penholder having an eraser-blade projecting from one side of the stock or handle portion and forming an integral part of one of the pen-holding members of the holder. The invention consists in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.

Of the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figures 1 and 2 rep resent elevations of apenholder embodying my invention, taken from different points. Fig. 3 represents a section on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4: represents a section on line 4 4 of Fig. 2. Fig. n represents a section similar to Fig. 2, the sheet-metal penholding member and the pen being removed. Fig. 5 represents a View of the blank from which the sheet-metal holding member is made. Fig. 6 represents a side View of the completed sheet-metal holding member. Fig. 7 represents a section on line 7 7 of Fig. 6.

The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all the figures.

In the drawings, 6 represents the stock or handle portion of a penholder, which may be made of wood or any other suitable material and is provided at its lower end with a cavityf, preferably of cylindrical form, and with a slot 9, extending lengthwise of the cavity and made in one side of the wall thereof.

0 represents a pen-holding member which is formed to enter the cavityf and is of such diameter that when inserted in the cavity there will be an annular pen-receiving crevice between the wall of the cavity and the outer surface of the member 0, so that when a pen is inserted in the said crevice it will be held therein by friction.

d represents a blade which is formed on the member 0 and proj ects therefrom through the slot g,said blade havingasharpenedouter edge at, so that it is adapted to serve as an eraser, whereof the part e is the handle, the blade 61 being secured to the handle e by the insertion of the member a in the cavity f and by the projection of the blade through the slot g. I prefer to make the member 0 and blade cl from a single piece or blank of sheet-steel or other metal of the form shown in Fig. 5. Said blank has prongs b b at one edge. The blank is bent, as indicated in Figs. 6 and 7, to form the blade cl and the member a, the prongs Z) I) being at one end of the member 0 and adapted to be forced into the handle 6 at the inner end of the cavity f. The prongs b I) therefore serve as attaching means for firmly securing the member 0 and blade (Z in the handle.

Itwill be seen that the described construction is simple and inexpensive, providing a penholder and an efficient eraser at a cost very slightly in excess of that of an ordinary penholder.

I do not limit myself to the described detailsofconstrnction. Ibelieveit to bebroadly new to provide a pen-handle with a pen-grasping member provided with an eraser-blade which projects from one side of the handle, at the lower portion thereof, in close proxim ity to the pen, so that the upper portion of the handle may be grasped to operate the eraser without liability of contact of the hand with the pen. The construction of the device may therefore be variously modified without departing from the spirit of my invention.

A penholder comprising a handle having a cavity in one end and a slot in one side of the wall of the cavity, and a filling-piece inserted in the cavity and having a blade projecting therefrom through the said slot, the filling-piece forming the inner face or wall of a pen-receiving crevice.

2. A penholder comprising a handle having a cavityin one end and a slot in one side of the wall of the cavity, and a filling-piece inserted in said cavity and having means at its inner end for attachment to the handle, and a blade projecting from the filling-piece through said slot.
