Description

@nimh tn-ts atwt @Hite ISAAC C'. TATE, OF NEW LONDON, CONNECTICUT.
Letters Patent No. 67,685. dated August 13, 1867.
IMPROVED 'VISIL fitte .tlgrhnle 'wenn tu in time ifttws @anni nnb making @an uf tige samt.
',IO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, ISAAC C. TATE, of the city and county of New London, and Stute of Connecticut, have invented a new and improved Vise; and I do hereby declare the following to be a. full, olea-r, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in Which- Figure l is a top view of my invention,
Figure 2 is an elevation of my invention showing the end of the vise towards which the screw projects.
Figure 3 is a. vertical section of a. portion of my invention showing the method of fastening to the bench.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspond-ing parts in the several figures.
In this invention the vise is provided with an attachment, by means of which it can he adjusted at any distance from and at any angle with the work-bench'to which it is fixed.
The 'object of the invention is to provide a'vise which can be used for general work in the machine shop, and held by a double fasten-ing which can be operated from the top of the bench or vise.
In forder that others skilled in the art to which my invention uppertains 'may be enabled to make and use the same, I will proceed to describe it in detail. i
In the drawings, A represents the fixed jew and B the movable jaw of :L common bench vise, of which C is the screw-shaft and D D the operatinghhandle or lever. E F are bolts, which attach the vise to the Workbench. They operate in a, longitudinal vertical slot, G, in the base or bed-piece H of the' vise, their' heads ef working upon ledges g gin the sides of thevslot, and holding the bed-piece firmly to the bench, so that no lateral, verticl, or twisting motion can be impar-ted to it by any force insuiiicient to b reak the bolts EF, and yet` -so that it will admit of a longitudinal motion back and forth through the length of the slot G. The rear end of the bell-piece H is flattened and widened so as to become nearly semicircular, and is providedwith another vertical slot, I. This slot is curved, being in shape the arc of :i circle, the radius of which is the distance from E to Rend comm I forward sons to bring the bolt E intol the slot I, the vise can be turned to the right or left upon th bolt F, as a. pivot, the bolt E Working in the slot I from one end of it to the other. The bolts E end F are placed in 'a lline perpendicular to the front side of the bench. The axis of the vise may be deected .from this line to any required-degree, according to the-length of =the curved slot I.
Hav'ing'thus described my invention, wha-t -I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination ofthe slots'I and G and bolts E F, in n vise, substantially as and for the purpose described.
