JOHN H. BURRELL, JR, OF "HARLESTOW'N, MASSACHUSETTS. Letters Patent No. 67,531, dated August 13, 1867.
IMPROVEMENT IN CARRIAGE-COUPLING.
TO ALL WHOM IT-MAY CONCERN Be it known that I, JOHN H. BURRELL, Jr., of Oharlestown, in the county of Middlesex, and State of Massachusetts, have invented. new and useful improvements in Flexible Detachable Couplings; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, references being bad to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature ofmy invention consists in the peculiar formation of. the butting ends'of the two parts of the coupling, so that when they come together and a pin or key is placed between them, they become attached to eiwh other; but the joint thus formed is flexible and admits of either piece forming the coupling having a vertical motion independent of its mate." I
To enable others skilled in the 'art'to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and use. .In the drawings V Figure 1 is a perspective-view of my improved coupling.
Figure 2 is a plan showing the two partsAand B in full lines detached, and A in full lines with B in dotted lines, connected by the key 01' pin C. y
Eigu're 3 represents in perspective one part, B, of the coupling.
Figure 4 representsin elevation the key C-D'.
Figure 5 represents the couplingin elevation.
To construct my improved coupling I proceed as follows: I make of any suitable metal the two pieces of which the coupling is formed, with butting ends formed as shown in the drawings. The reverse ends connected to the vehicle may be formed in any desired manner.
From an examination of fig. 2 it will appear that the two parts A and B may be put together or drawn apart freely, but that if the key 0, made as'shown'in the drawings, he slipped into it's place, then the parts A and B can no longer be detached, buttyet are free to oscillate, one upon theother, and are free to move in a vertical direction to a limited extent without'becoming detached. The key C is provided with a. small collar at its uppciend, so that it will not slip entirely through the opening between the two parts of the coupling. I
The advantages I claim for my invention are the extreme simplicity of construction, the fiexibility'in a horizontal plane, and the property of self-adjustment in a vertical plane; also that this coupling admits of but alight longitudinal motion, thus saving vehicles to which it is attachedfrom the shock due to taking up the slack in ordinary couplings.
Having thus described my invention, I will now proceed to set forth my claim. What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- A coupling made of the three parts A, B, and C, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN H. BURRELL, JR.
