SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 675,071, dated May 28, 1901. Application filed January 5, 1901. Serial No. 42.246. (No model.)

Be it known that I, FRANK F. SAVAGE, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsiu Drop-Stands forSewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

The present invention relates to that type of sewingmachine stands or tables in which means are provided to permit the sewing-machine head to drop beneath the table-top and be covered over by a hinged leaf when notrequired for actual use.

The object of the present improvement is to provide a simple, durable, and effective construction of parts which are capable of a very ready and convenient manipulation inthe operations of raising or lowering the sewing-machine head and with which the sewing-machine head is supported in a substantial manner (when in actual use) in a plane level with the table-top and without any gaps or open spaces between the margin of its bed-plateand the opening in the table-top through which it descends or drops and with which, in addition, the driving-belt of the machine is held in proper position to be engaged by the belt- Wheel of the machine as the same is lifted up into an operative position, all as will hereinafter more fully appear and be more particularly pointed out in the claims. Similar numerals of reference indicate like parts in the several views.

Referring to the drawings, l represents the main table-top, having an opening or orifice 2 for the passage of the sewing-machine head and of a sufficient size to permit the' ready passage therethrough of the said head and its connected parts.

3 is a supplementary table-top arranged immediately above the main table-top l and formed with a central opening for the recept-ion of the base-plate of the sewinginacliine head, and which supplementary table-top will comprise a stationary portion 3, permanently secured to the main table-top l, and a front section or portion 4, pivotally attached to the main table-top l and provided with a slinken ledge 5,\upon which the forward edge of the base-plate of the sewinglnacliine head rests and is supported in its raised or active position, the construction being such that said hinged section can be swung up, as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 3, to permit the rising or drop movements of the machinehead, which in the present construction will be hinged at the rear margin of the aforesaid opening by suitable hinges attached within the recesses G therefor in the top 3.

The general construction and arrangement of parts so far described is common to dropstands for Sewing-machines now in public use.- The novelty involved in the present invention comprises a special construction of parts, as follows:

In the present improvement the opening in the supplementary table-top is of a size and shape corresponding to that of the base-plate of the sewing-machine head` so that when said head is swung up into a raised or active p0- sition the base-plate thereof will fit said openy ing with its surface level with the surface of said supplementary table-top, and the :front and more or less of the right-hand end of said opening will be formed by the hinged front section 4, which to this end is formed with an extension S, which extends backwardly a sut'- ficient distance to receive one of the holes 9 through which the driving-belt of the machine passes, the other belt-hole being formed in the stationary part of the auxiliary tabletop, as shown, and in my preferred construction the two belt-holes are connected together by a transverse channel 10, in which the belt lies when the sewing-machine stand is in a dropped position. Vith such arrangement of parts the belt is held in proper position or alinement to be engaged by the belt-pulley of IOO the sewingmachine head as the same is raised into an active or operative position.

In my preferred construction, asillustrated in Fig. l of lthe drawings, the extension 8 of the hinged section 4 is shown as extending to the middle of the auxiliary table-top; but it is within the province of the constructor to give it a greater. or less extension, in accordance with the clearance (the diameter of, as well as the elevation of) the rearwardlyar ranged driving wheel or pulley of the sewingmachine head may require in the dropping of the sewing-machine head below the table-top. In effecting such drop movement of the sewing-machine head the hinged front section 4 will be iirst swung up out of the way. In like manner the hinged front section 4 is shown in Figs. l and 3 as hinged at its forward edge by means of hinges 1l as affording the most convenient arrangement for ready mani-pulation. It is, however, within the province of the present invention to hinge said section 4 at its right-hand end by means of hinges ll/ when circumstances may suggest. without departing from the spirit of this part of the present invention.

Having thus fully described my said invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

, 1. In a drop-stand for sewing-machines, the

combination of a main table-top formed withan opening of capacity to permitthe passage of the sewing-machine head, a supplementary table-top comprising a stationary section and a hinged section having a backward extension,such sections being formed with an open ing of a size corresponding.r with the baseplate of the sewing-machine head,.and^with belt-holes for the passage of the driving-belt of the sewing-machine, substantially as set forth.

2. In adrop-stand forsewing-machines, the combination of a main table-top formed with an opening of capacity to permit the passage of the sewing machine head, a supplementary table-top comprising a stationary section and a hinged section having a backward extension, such sections being formed with an open# ing of a size corresponding with the baseplate of the sewing-machine head, with beltholes for the passage of the driving-belt of the sewing-machine and with a belt-receiving channel connecting said belt-holes, substantially as set forth.

3. In a drop-stand forsewng-machines, the combination of a main table-top formed with an opening of capacity to permit the passage ofthe sewing-machine head, a supplementary table-top comprising a stationary section and a movable section hinged at its forward edge and provided with a backward exlension,such sections being formed with an opening of a size corresponding with the base-plate of the sewing-machine head and with belt-holes for the passage of the driving-belt of the sewingmachine, substantially as set forth.

4. In adrop-stand for sewing-machines, the combination of a main table-top formed with an opening of capacity to permit the passage of the sewing-machine head, a supplementary tabletop comprising a stationary section and a movable section hinged at its forward edge and provided with a backward extension such sections being formed with an opening of a size corresponding with the base-plate of the sewing-machine head' with belt-holes for the passage of the drivngbelt of the sewing-machine and with a belt-receiving channel connecting said belt-holes, substantially as set forth.'
