SAFETY-HOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part f Letters Patent No. 674,383, dated May 21, 1901.
Application filed September 26,1900. Serial No. 31,163. (No model.)

Be it known that I, WILLIAM D. JEWELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Salt Lake City, in the county of Salt Lake and State of Utah, have invented new and useful vImprovements in Safety-Hooks, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to safety-hooks adapted especially for use with hoisting apparatus; and the object of the invention is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which willettectually prevent the accidental detachment of the hook from the hoist ingropes or other device with which it is used.
The construction of the improvement will be fully described hereinafter in connection with the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation of the hook in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the hook in its open position, and Fig. 3 is a side elevation with one side of the movable slide or casing of the hook removed.
The reference-numeral 1 designates the,
shank or body of the, device formed at one end with an integral hook 2 and at its oppoposite end with a head 3, to which is secured a bail 4 by means of a pin 5.
The bodyl is formed adjacent to its outer end with a flange 6, which serves as a stop to limit the movement of the movable member of the device, as will be further referred to hereinafter. Y
7 designates a slide comprising a plate or casting of U form in cross-section, which encompasses the body 1 and projects beyond the latter. Between the edges of the slide 7, ad-
jacent to the hook, is rigidly secured a blockV 8, having a curved projection 9, which is adapted to abut against the end of the hook 2 and form in connection therewith a closed ring, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3.
10 designates a lever pivotally secured between the sides of the slide 7 by means of a pin 11 and formed with an elongated slot 12, through which extends across-pin 13,the ends of which are secured to the side walls of the slide.
The outer end of the lever 10 is formed with a loop or ring 14, and the inner edge of said lever is formed with a dog or lug 15, adapted means of a flat springl7, one end of which is A secured by a set-screw 18 or equivalent means to the outer side of the block 8, while its free end bears against the outer side or edge or" the lever.
The operation and utility of the device constructed as above described will be readily understood. When the slide (with its attached block and lever) is in the position shown in Figs. 1' and 3, the dog 15 is firmly held in engagement with the groove 16 by the force or" the spring 17, and the hook cannot open by the accidental movement oi' the slide and block. When the lever 10 is tilted upon its fulcrnm-pin 11 by means of a trippingrope attached tothe loop 14, the spring is lifted and the slide may be moved until the dog or lug 15 strikes the stop-{iange 6. When the slide is moved back to close the hook, the spring automatically locks the dog in engagement with the body 1.
I claim- 1. A safety-hook comprising a body portion formed with a hook at one end and with a groove adjacent to its opposite end; a slide movable on said body portion; a block rigidly secured between the sides of said slide;
a lever fulcrumed between the sides of the slide and formed with an elongated slot and a dog or lug; a cross-pin for limiting the movement of said lever; and a spring secured at one end to said block and having its opposite free end bearing against said lever.
2. A safety-hook comprising a body portion formed with an integral hook; a U- shaped slide through which said body portion extends; a block rigidly secured between the sides of the slide, and having a curved projection; a lever fulcrumed between the sides of the slides and formed with an elongated slot and a projectinglug or dog adapted to enter a corresponding groove in the body of the hook; a spring secured at one end to said blockand bearing at its opposite end against said lever; and a stop projecting from the body portion and adapted to engage said dog to limit the movement of the slide. y
