To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. REYNOLDS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ridgway, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new'and useful Improvements in Lamp Burners and Chimneys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip-.

tion of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Persons handling and using the ordinary kerosene-lamp are familiar with the inconvenience, annoyance, and expense attendant upon the replacement of broken chimneys resulting from their easy displacement from the lamp unless the greatest care is observed not to bring the chimney in contact with any object or to move the lamp suddenly in a lateral direction.

The present invention has for its objects to minimize the chances for displacement of the chimney and to obviate the ills and objectionable features attendant thereupon.

VVith these ends in view and such others as are attributable to and are the direct result of the invention the latter may be said to consist of the novel interlocking means between the burner and the chimney and such other details of construction and combination of the parts, which hereinafter will be more fully described, illustrated, and finally embodied in the claim.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a lamp burner and chimney, showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the burner, the chimney being in section. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical section.

Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.

The burner comprises the gallery 1, cone 2, and holders 3. In accordance with the present invention the holders 3 embody a novel construction and are inwardly deflected at their lower ends adjacent to the gallery to form interlocking portions 4, which are adapted to project over basal extensions of the chimney 5 and positively hold the same when properly positioned upon the said gallery. The

"'The chimney 5 may be of any form and shape and is provid d at its lower end with oppositely-extending portions 6, which are designed to underlap the interlocking portions 4 and interlock therewith, so as to prevent casual displacement of the chimney when the latter is struck by an object or when the lamp is moved suddenly from side to side. The outer extensions 6 form segment basal flanges and are of a length to pass freely between adjacent holders 3 and are of a transverse extent to come beneath the interlocking projections 4 when the chimney is partially rotated after being seated upon the gallery 1. The parts 6 are sufficiently stout tosubserve the purpose for which they are designed without suffering fracture when subjected to a strain or receiving a light blow.

It will be observed that the interlocking projections 4 of the spring-wire holders 3are formed by bending the wire inward at at and thence outward to provide a substantially U -shaped crimp or bend b, which has its base or return portion facing inwardly and its open end facing outwardly. The lower arm ct of this crimped portion forms a hook, which is adapted to extend over upon the base-flange 6 of the chimney and hold the same clamped to the burner, while the closed end or return part 1) acts as a shoulder to bear against the base of the chimney and hold the same from outward shifting. The holder also curves inwardly and upwardly from the outer end of the upper arm of'the crimped portion, as shown at c, and forms a spring-arm adapted to bear against the upper part of the base of the chimney at cl to further obviate movement thereof. By this means each holder has three points of bearing on the chimney and insures a simple and positive connection.

It is contemplated to apply the invention to burners of every variety with which it is contemplated to use chimneys, so as to positively secure the latter when in place. Within the purview of the invention the interlocking parts 3 and 6 may be disposed in any relation other than that disclosed so long as the desired result is attained.

When it is required to remove the chimney from the burner,itisincumbent that the chimney be turned to cause the flanges 6 to clear the holders or the interlocking projections 4 thereof, when the chimney can be lifted from the burner in the ordinary way.

In adapting the invention to the various styles and makes of burners it is to be understood that changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from orsacrificing any advantages of the invention.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, and desired to be secured by Letters Patent, is-

In combination, a lamp-burner, a chimney having outer spaced basal flange portions, and holders secured at their lower ends to the burner and comprising spring portions of hook form to engage over the basal flange portions, crimped parts to bear laterally against the sides of the chimney adjacent to the basal flanged parts, and upwardly and inwardly curved spring arms adapted to bear against the sides of the chimney at a higher level than the said crimped' parts, substantially as described.
