BOILER POB. HEATING WATER.
@Llp .tloiehule referat in in time Enters irtent eggplant tigt same.
.TO ALL WHOM` IT MAY CONCERN:
Bey it known that I, CHARLES A. HARPER, of Rahway, in the county of Union, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boilers for Heating Water; and. I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being-had to thc annexed drawings, making part of thisspecificatiomin which- Figure l is a perspective view, and
Figure 2 is a vertical section.
The same letters are employed when referring to identical parts.
A is a boilerot` any convenient form or desired size. The water contained in this boiler is heated by gas or coal, or'in any 'convenient manuel' The heat from theiire with-the draught rises into the cylinder B, which is open below, This cylinder stands in the boiler, and is completely surrounded by water in contact with the heated sides'of the cylinder B. Within this cylinder i's placed a cylindrical heater, C, made tightand attached to the top of the cylinder B.. Through this inner cylindrical heater passes a conical pipe, ]3, communicating with the Ihre below, and through a narrow aperture with the pipe E above. This pipe, passing through the boiler, discharges the smoke into the air. The cylindrical heater'C thus arranged contains a narrow water-chamber, extend,- ing the entire length, and has a fire surface equal to its external area plus the area ofl the conical pipe B', which forms its 'inner surface. Two pipes D D are placed so as to connect the internal cylinder C with the mass ofwater in the boiler. The pipe D is placed near the bottom of the cylinder C, and the pipe D is placed near the top of the same. On account o`f itsgreater fire surface, as compared with the amount of water contained, the water will heat far more rapidly in the internal heater C than it will in the bodyt` the boiler AL The heated water in the heater C being specifically lighter than that contained in the boiler will rise, passing through the pipe D, and to supply its place a currentot` water will flow into the heater below through the-,pipe D. By this means a rapid circulation will be established through the heater, and the heat*thusacquiredbcing diffused through the boiler A will rapidly elevate its temperature.
I do not claim to have been the first to make use of this principle of circulation, but only the means by which it is produced. i
What Iclaim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent,ris-
The boiler A, having an internal ilue or tire-chamber, B, surrounding the'pipe-formed water-heater C, through y which the water in the boiler circulates by means of pipes D D, said parts being constructed and arranged for use, substantially in the manner and for the purpose Set forth. i
In testimony whereofl have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
` o. A. HARPER.
Witnesses;
