Beit known that I, SMITH S. SIMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beatrice, in the county of Gage and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Disk Harrow, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved disk harrow, the object of my invention being to provide im proved means for scraping the harrow-disks to keep them clear of adhering earth when the harrow is in operation.
A particular object of my invention is to combine with each harrow disk a pair of scrapers, one of which operates near the center of the disk andthe other of which operaies near the periphery thereof, and means for keeping the center scraper normally in engagement with the barrow-disk and the other scraper normally out of engagement therewith, and means for reversing said arrangement of the said Scrapers. Y
To these ends my invention consists in th peculiar construction and combination of device hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed j out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a top plan view of a barrow-section provided with disk-scraping devices embodying myimprovements. Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view.
The barrow-disks 1 shaft 2, on which they are mounted, and the frame 3, having the standards 4, in which the shaft is journaled, are of the usual construction and form no part of my present improvements.
Projecting rearward from the frame 3 are supporting bracket-arms 5, which form guides y and supports fora pairof longitudinally-movable bars 6 7, which are disposed parallel with the frame 3 and one of which is iu rear of the other. The forward bar G is provided with a series of scrapers 8, which depend therefrom and are adapted to engage the concave sides of the harrow-disks near the centers thereof, the saidA Scrapers being curved to conform, substantially, with the contour of the harrowdisks, and said scrapers are held normally in engagement wit-h the central portion of the barrow-disks by a spring (one or more) 9, which, as here shown, is arranged on the bar (i and bears between one of the Scrapers and a fixed support or lug 10, that projects from the rear side of the frame 3; but any other suitable form of spring may be employed for this purpose, aud I do not desire to limit myself iu this particular.
The Scrapers 11, which depend from and are carried by the bar 7, are adapted to scrape the concave surfaces of the barrow-disks near the peripheries thereof, and said scrapers are disposed in rear of the scrapers 8, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The scrapers 11 are secured to the bar 7 by means of set-bolts 12 and participate in the endwise movelnent of the bar 7, and the Scrapers 8 are similarly secured to the bar 6 by means of set-bolts 13, and are adapted thereby to participate in the endwise movements of the bar 6 while being normally in engagement with the central concave surfaces of the barrow-disks, hereinbefore stated.' Any suitable means may be employed for securing the Scrapers to the bars, aud I do not desire to limit myself in this particular.
A foot-lever 14, which may be of any suitable preferred form, is here shown as journaled in a U-shaped bracket 15, secured to and projecting rearward from the frame 3, and said lever is providedV near its lower end with a rightangled yoke 16, connected to the bars 6 7, and forming a link which connects the said bars and causes them to simultaneously move in opposite directions when the lever is operated. Anyr suitable means may be employed to connect the yoke 16 to the bars 6 7. As here shown, the bars 6 7 have keepers lL on their lower sides, in which the ends of said yoke engage. By reason of the spring which keeps the Scrapers of the bar 6 normally in contact with the central portions of the barrow-disk and the yoke orlink which connects said bar 6 to the bar 7 these Scrapers 11 of said bar 7 are normally held out of coutact with the barrow-disks, the tendency of the disks being to become clogged with adhering earth at their central portions rather than at the outer portions of their concave surfaces; but when it becomes desirable to scrape the outer portions of the concave surfaces of the harrow-disks this may be accomplished by operating the foot-lever, so as to cause the rod 6 to move the Scrapers 8 from the harrow-disks and simultaneously move the bar 7, so'as to apply its Scrapers 11 to the IOO barrow-disks, said Scrapers being held in operative relation to the barrow-disks as long as may be necessary in order to clear them by detaining the foot-lever, and when the foot-lever is released the spring 9 normally returns the bars 6 and 7 and the tWo series of Scrapers respectively attached thereto to their initial normal positions, he'reinbefore described.
I do not desire to limit myself to any particular form of scraper-operating lever or connections between the longitudinally-movable bars, as the same may be varied Without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, I claiml. The combination with a barrow-disk, of a pair of Scrapers disposed one in rear of the other and adapted to operate on different portions of the surface of the disk and means for alternately pressing said Scrapers against the surface of the disk,substan tially as described.
