MlLEAGE-TICKET AND HOLDER THIEREFR.
SPECIFICATION forming' part of' Letters Patent No. 662,723, dated November 2'?, 190D.
Application lhecl March 22, 1899. Serial No. 710,085. (No model.)
T0 ctZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JENNIE O. HIOKEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Leipsic, in ythe county of Putnam and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvementsin Mileage-Tickets and Holders Therefor; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, andA exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same This invention relates to an improved inile age-ticket and holder therefor, and has for its principal object to provide such a ticket which can be used only by the purchaser or proper owner and cannot be made use of or sold by scalpers It is well known that mileage-tickets after being partially used .are bought up by the scalpers and resold and used, one ticket being thus bought and resold often several times, thereby resulting in a great loss to the railroad issuing the tickets. l prevent this rew selling of the ticket, consequently producing a ticket of great value to the railroads, by so constructing the ticket and holder and arranging the former in the latter that it is impossible after a part of the ticket has been Withdrawn from the holder to replace such part or to ascertain how much of the ticket remains in the holder, thus rendering the ticket valueless to a would-be second purchaser, and by so arranging the ticket in the holder and sealing the latter that should the ticket be removed to ascertain the number of miles for which the ticket is good it cannot be replaced in the holder or case.
Another object of my invention is to furnish a ticket of the character described and holder in a suitable form to be carried in the pocket Without danger of mutilating or tearing the ticket.
A further object is to make a holder from which the ticket can be readily Withdrawn at pleasure and so much thereof as desired detached.
A further object of the invention is to generally simplify and improve the construction of such a ticket and holder.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown a ticket and holder embodying my improvements; but I desire it particularly iinderstood that I do not limit myinvention in its useful applications t-o the particular construction which for the sake of illustration only I have therein illustrated. l
In the said drawings, Figure l is a plan view of a holder, showinga part of the ticket protruding therefrom. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view showing the holder and ticket.
Referring tothe drawings, wherein like reference characters refer to like parts throughout both views, A indicates a holder, which, as shown, is generally rectangular in form and relatively thin or flat, so that it can be carried with comfort in the pocket. This holder is constructed with a bottom B, ends C and D, and a top E, which, as shown, ex tends from one end toward the other, butterminates some little distance therefrom, asindicated at d., thus leaving a space F between the end of the top and one end, as C, of the holder or case. Above the top E, extending from the end C over the space F and over a part of the top, from which latter it is separated a distance only suflicient to permit the passage of the ticket-slip, is a cover-plate G,
which, shown, extends from the end of the l holder C approximately half the length of the holder. 'lhe several parts of the holder or case are so constructed and secured together that the case is permanently closed-that is to say, after the parts are assembled, with the ticket-slip, to be hereinafter described, placed therein, the parts cannot be disconnected or separated to obtain access to or a view of the ticket without destroying the holder or case, and thus rendering the same useless. The holder can be made of any suitable material.
Within the holder or case A, between the top E and bottom thereof, is the ticket-slip, (indicated at H.) This slip, it will be observed, is folded at the points h h in a substantially zigzag manner and practically occupies the interior of the holder from end to end. 1f desired, as an additional safeguard the slip can be secured to the inside of the holder, as indicated at h. The end I of the ticket-slip extends between the top of the holder and the cover-plate G and projects beyond the same, whereby it can be seen and grasped to pull the slip from the holder through the pas- IOO sage between the top and cover-plate. The ticket-slip is divided by suitable indications or characters into a number of complementary parts or tickets, each of which is provided with suitable characters, as indicated at K, which represent the distance or number of miles for which each ticket or part H is good, and each ticket or part has the same characters or indications as the other tickets or parts and no marks or indications whatever to show how many tickets remain in the holder or case. The slip is made up of any desired number of these tickets or parts H. It will thus be seen that there is nothing on the tickets or slip to indicate how much of the slip or how many of the tickets or parts remain in the holder or case.
Suitable directions appear on the holder to indicate the proper use of the ticket-such, for instance, as If more than 5 miles pulled out that much is Void of use.
My ticket and holder are intended to be used in the following manner: So much of the ticket as is desired to be used is pulled in the direction indicated by the arrow by the proper person and detached in any suitable manner, as by tearing against the edge of the cover-plate. Should the ticket-slip be drawn out, it will be observed that such part cannot again be returned to the holder on account of the arrangement of the slip therein relative to the top and cover-plate, as the slip, being liexible, will follow the passage between the top and the cover-plate, but will not turn around under the edge CZ of the top, but will tend, rather, to continue straight backward until it encounters the end C of the case or holder, when upon further movement thereof backward it will crumple or crush into the small space, .if there be any between the end of the folds of the ticket-slip and the end of the case or holder. As this space is Very small a very limited amount of the ticketslip can be forced intoit, and consequentlya limited amount of the slip only can be returned to the holder after it has been pulled out. As has been before stated, the ticketslip cannot be taken from the holder Without destroying the latter, except by pulling through the passage between the cover-plate and top.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination with a permanentlyclosed case having an opening therein, of a continuous ticket-slip in said case comprising a plurality of complementary portions each provided with indicating characters, the characters on one portion having no relation to the characters on another portion whereby it is impossible to tell from l one portion how much of the slip remains in the casing, and a cover-plate over said opening for preventing the return to the case of a portion of the slip withdrawn, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a substantially dat permanently-closed case having an opening therein near one end, of a ticket-slip in said case comprising a plurality of complementaryportions each havingindicatingcharacters, the characters on one portion bearing no relation to the characters on another portion whereby it is impossible to tell from one portion how much of the slip remains in the case, and a cover-plate over said opening and extending beyond the same for preventing the return to the case of a portion of the slip withdrawn, substantially as described.
3. The herein-described permanently-closed ticket-slip case of substantially iiat rectangular shape and having near one end an opening, and a cover-plate above said opening and extending beyond the same and spaced slightly Vfrom the case, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JENN IE C. HICKEY.
