NUT-LOCK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,343, dated November 20, 1900.

To aZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that .I, MILLARD MOORE Bos- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Orleans, in the parish of Orleans and State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nut-Locks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in nut-locks; and it consists in the novel devices hereinafter described and claimed.
My invention will he understood by reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein the same parts are indicated by the same letters of reference throughout the several views.
Figure 1 is a view in side elevation illustrating my improved nut-lock in the locked position. Fig. 2 isa view of the same as seen from the right in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is asectional view taken on the line 3 3 in Fig. 2, showing the locking-clamp as partially detached and in the position to be either removed Or forced into the locking position; and Fig. 4. is a view in elevation of the bolt used in connection with my locking means.
Arepresentsthebolt,havingascrew-threaded portion A, in which isformeda slot orrecess A opening at the point of the bolt, thus forming bifurcations or pronged members A A at the end of the bolt. The screw-threads are formed on. these bifurcated portions A in continuation of the screw-threads formed on the solid portion of the bolt.
D represents a washer or collar which fits loosely over the shank of the bolt ahead of the nut B. The not B is screwed on over the end of the bolt and closely against the washer D.
0 represents a U-shaped locking device of strong spring metal of a thickness to allow it to fit freely but snugly within the recess A in the end of the bolt, and the said locking device has two similar arms C O, which by reason of the resiliency of the metal of the lock are strong spring-arms,and these arms 0 have each a beveled spur or catch 0, adapted to engage beneath the nut when the locking device 0 is forced completely into its locking position, as seen in Fig. 1. The locking device O is placed in position for locking the not by first engaging one of the catches a beneath the edge of the nut, the body of the locking device G resting in the recess A in the bolt and the beveled catch 0 on the opposite arm of the locking device resting upon the top or side of the nut. By the sharp blow of a hammer or other instrument the disengaged arm O and its beveled catch 0 are forced in position and the latter engages beneath the edge of the nut, securely clamping the locking device. In its clamped position it will be readily seen that the nut will be securely held against turning by the locking device 0, the arms 0 of which clamp closely the opposite sides of the nut and the catches C engage beneath the opposite edges of the nut. The looking device 0 may be released for the purpose of unscrewing the nut by-meansof an instrument such as a crow-bar inserted between the washer D and the end of one of the arms 0, whereby the corresponding catch a may be disengaged and the locking device G will free itself. The washer D is ofsufticient thickness and of sufficient thickness only to permit the locking device 0 to be placed in position, as illustrated in Fig. 3.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a cheap, simple, and efficient locking device and one that may be readily disengaged and relocked without inj ury to the bolt or the nut, thereby rendering it possible to use the nut and bolt over and over again, as well as the locking device itself.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is-
In a nutand bolt lock,the combination with the bolt, having its screw-threaded portion provided with the axial recess A and a nut adapted to engage the screw-threaded portion of the bolt, the said nut having a beveled outer face; of a U -shaped locking device.
passing through the axial recess of said bolt, capable of longitudinal adjustment therein, and having similar resilient arms so shaped as to conform with and snugly fit the opposite sides and the beveled face of said nut when forced over the same, the said resilient arms being provided at their ends with beveled catches for engaging beneath the under face of the nut and retain the locking device thereon, substantially as described.
