Description

@auch tatrs atnzt @fitta IMPROYED EXTENSION SGAFFOLDS.
dtlgstlgtule marsh tu in Hirse Enters gntrut mit mating parini tte' stmt.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:l
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. TANNER, of Mentor, Lake county, State of Ohio, have invented certain improvements in Extension Sca'olds, and which are added to and made part of my improved extension scaffold patented 27th November, 1866, No. 60,085; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figurc l is a front elevation of my said extension scaffold.
Figure 2, aside elevation thereof; and
Figure 3, a top View of a portion of the main frame, showing the swinging braces hereinafter mentioned.
The letters of reference marked thereon indicate similar parts in all thc figures.
My said improvements consist in the following: first, in theemployment of guy-ropes attached to the platform, and operated by a windlass supported in the frame of the machine, so that they can be drawn tight at any elevation of the said platform, for the purpose of preventing its swinging from side to side; and, second, attaching to the front side of the machine hinged braces for supporting and stcadying thc same, and so as to swing back when not in use.
The following description will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the saine:
The main frame, and all .other` parts ofthe machine excepting those hereafter stated, are constructed as described in the specification of my said patent of November 27, 1866. On the pair of tics B of the original machine is placed an additional'windlass, A, connected with which are two ropes, A and Az which I term guy-ropes. Said ropes are attached to the extreme ends of the platform H, as seen in iig. 1. On the front upper and lower ties B and B are secured, by hinges C and C2, two long braces, D', having a short rail, D, iig. 2, v Said braces are hinged so as to swing inwards on the frame, as shown in fig. 3. I
The operation is as follows: After the platform is elevated to the required height by means of the lower Windlass, the upper one is turned so as to draw the guy-ropes tight, in which condition they will be kept by the pawl and ratchet of the said windlass.' The hinged brace arrangement supplies a bracing support ready at hand, and which can he folded back on the machine when not required. I
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters latent, is
1. I claim the Windlass A, guy-ropes Al and A2, in combination with the platform H, operating substantially as and for the purpose specified. l
2. The swing-braces D', hinged to and in combination with the main frame, as described, and operating as and for the purpose set forth.
CHARLES M. TANNER.
