I UNrTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
.IULIUS HENRICH, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
IDENTIFYING DEVICE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 661,641, dated November 13,1900.
Application filed February l0, 1900. Serial No. 4,832. (N model.)
To all La7/torn t may concer/'n.-
Beit known that I, J ULIUs HENRICH, a subject ot' the Emperor of Germany, (but having declared myintention of becoming a citizen of the United States of America,) residing in the city of Philadelphia, county of Philadelphia, and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Identifying Device, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention-is to provide a device to be applied to various articles, as umbrellas, walking-sticks, pipes, bicycles, 85e., in such a way that the owner of such article may be readily identified without, however, having his name exposed on the outside of such article, and for this purpose the device consists of a sleeve having hinged or otherwise removably attached thereto a lid or cover; and my invention further consists of the improvements hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, Figure l is a perspective view of my new device, showing a sleeve or ring having hinged thereto a lid or cover, the latter being in an open position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lid or cover closed.
Referring now to the drawings for a further description of my invention, A is the device, entirely surrounding the article, to which it is fastened in any suitable manner.
In the .drawings the device consists of a ring a of a size to fit and encircle a stick, a tubing of a bicycle, or other article. On the outside of this ring is formed a recess a of a length greater than one-half of the periphery of the ring, adapted to receive a lid or cover b, s0 that when the latter is closed it is flush with the outside of the ring a.
At 0,2 this lid bV is hinged to the ring ct, and the fastening of the said lid at its free end to the ring is obtained by extending the free end b beyond the diametrical line through the point of the hinge d2, or, in other words, the lid covering the entire recess a', which is greater in length than half the periphery of the ring a, must with its free end be forced over the point of the ring, which is diametrically opposite the said hinge. The part of the lid be yond the said point serves to hold the lid in a closed position in the recess a', as clearly shown in the drawings.
The lid of the identifying device bears on the outside a suitable inscription-for in stance, as in Fig. 2, Please Open. On the inside of the lid is the name and address of the owner of the article, either engraved or written on paper or other material, which is fastened to the said lid, and on the outside of the ring, in the recess ct' thereof, may be an inscription stating that a reward will be paid by the owner if the article is returned to him or her.
Having thus described the nature and objects of my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An identifying device comprising a ring, a recess of more than one-half of the periphery of the ring provided therein, a lid hinged to said ring and covering the entire recess, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
